Amazing bit of playoff trivia

I saw this little excerpt in Jayson Stark's weekly "That's Debatable" chat today. It has to do with pitchers being traded mid-season to contending clubs.

Quote:
SportsNation Jayson Stark: I give the Brewers credit. They haven't been to the postseason in 26 years. They're stocked with prospects. So they feel like they owe it to their fan base to take a shot. But if you haven't checked out my Rumblings and Grumblings column from last week, I point out how rare it is for any team to trade for a pitcher like this who leads them to a parade float. The only starter traded in midseason who has won a World Series game in the last 30 years is . . . (ta-taaaa) Jeff Weaver. How scary is that slice of trivia?
That's quite shocking, actually.

It's hard to say just based on that information that a team like the Brewers shouldn't throw away top prospects for a rental, because after all, a guy like C.C. Sabathia is real good, but that kind of history is not flattering for doing so.

Fascinating! I chalk it up mostly to the fact that the real contenders are already loaded to begin with, but it's interesting regardless. Thanks for the tidbit.

Can't wait for Sheets, Sabathia and Fielder to walk after the season, and the Reds to move past the Brewers next year!!!

Maybe we could get one of them to take that walk in our direction...money talks in this business. I think Senor Sheets is a prime candidate.

They will certainly be a different club next season. With Gamel probably coming up at first if Fielder is traded, and Gallardo returning, the Brewers still have a chance to be a real good team though.

The NL Central could continue to be a real strong division the next few years.

No to Sheets way to many times on the DL.

True, that is a big concern. Still, he's awfully hard to pass up if interested. If we sign him and he stays healthy we would have one of the best rotations in baseball.

Anyone who's smart enough to read the back of his baseball card can determine that's a bad, bad risk.

2005 = 22 starts
2006 = 17 starts
2007 = 24 starts
2008 = ??

Next.

See my post above. I realize what a big risk it is. I was simply saying he'd be a very tempting person to add to your rotation.

No, but he is going to go to arbitration, I believe. And he's got Scott Boras as his agent. Those two factors mean the Brewers are planning on trading him (and since I've read they probably aren't crazy about his attitude and that they have some good young corners in their system).

Re: Amazing bit of playoff trivia

I would love to have Sheets. Of course his contract would have to be incentive laden.
