That was a tough blow for the Reds and Concepcion. Davey was breaking out theSS mold of that time being no-hit but good field. This meant the Reds had play Chaney everyday and I think they picked up utility player named Ed Crosby who helped out some. But neither was as good as Davey.
BTW,what the heck was Sparky thinking batting Chaney 2nd?
Also the Reds have made up 6 games in just about 20 days on the Dodgers. They are now only 5 1/2 behind heading into the All Star break.

This was the final game before the All-Star break, and Davey had just been named to his first All-Star team.

I would guess that Chaney hit second because Sparky didn't want to juggle the lineup around, and the #2 spot was usually where Morgan batted. (In other words, the lineup cards were preprinted with 2B in the #2 hole! )

Five years ago (2003), a 6-4 loss at Great American Ball Park vs. the Brewers.

Milwaukee Brewers
Eric Young 2b
Scott Podsednik cf
Geoff Jenkins lf
Richie Sexson 1b
John Vander Wal rf

Adam Dunn lf
Jason LaRue c
Paul Wilson p

WP: Wayne Franklin (7-6)
LP: Paul Wilson (5-8)
Sv: Dan Kolb (2)
HR: CIN - Jose Guillen (20).

I was at this game. Jose Guillen got a standing ovation from the Moon Deck when he took his position in RF in the top of the sixth inning after hitting his homer in the bottom of the fifth. They were chanting "JO-SE! JO-SE!" However, I knew that he was going to be traded by the end of the month. I had no idea that the trade would work out so well, though.

Hernandez and Strawberry's HR's were in the 9th off the "great" Ben Hayes.

That was a good young outfield for the Expos. It looked like they, along with Carter, would be around for many years. Dawson and Carter were but Valentine flamed out after a couple of good seasons and bounced around with a number of teams for a while. Cromartie took off for Japan and had a nice career over there. I never really understood why he went there. It seems like he was still a good player here and am sure he could have made more money here since the cost of living is so high in Japan.
