Re: This Date In Reds History (8/6/08): Past Lineups
Thanks for posting that Tucker. Yaz seemed almost bitter about his playing career. It's a shame because he was a great player. Not all or many great players win a championship. Maybe the reason it doesn't seem like you ever see him anymore.
Bench confirmed in that story what I always thought the reason he retired at fairly young age(35). The losing of 1982 and 1983 just got to him. With not a lot of hope of improving he just didn't want to go through a rebuilding process. I wonder if he had kept playing that he would have been named player/manager instead of Rose in 1984?

Re: This Date In Reds History (8/6/08): Past Lineups
Geronimo, Concepcion, and Bench all played in this game. Geronimo, who at this point had been relegated to being the lefty half of the CF platoon, did not start against Padres left-hander Randy Jones, but entered the game as a defensive replacement for Ken Henderson in the ninth inning. Concepcion may have had a minor injury, as he had taken the weekend off as a starter--this was Rick Auerbach's third consecutive start. But Davey pinch-hit for Auerbach in the seventh inning, and stayed in the game at SS. Concepcion would be back in the lineup the next day. Bench may have somewhat more injured, as this was the second of seven consecutive starts for Vic Correll. It was also the second game of a two-week stretch in which Correll would start 11 of 14 games. Bench pinch-hit in the seventh inning for Fred Norman, and delivered a sacrifice fly to score Concepcion with the run that put the Reds ahead 2-1. Morgan must have had a nagging injury. This was the sixth of eleven consecutive starts for Junior Kennedy at 2B. Morgan hadn't started since July 30 vs. the Phillies. He had appeared as a pinch-hitter twice since then--on July 31, he pinch-hit for Mike LaCoss and delivered an RBI single, then was lifted for pinch-runner Ray Knight, and on August 4, he walked as a pinch-hitter for SS Rick Auerbach, and stayed in the game at 2B with Ray Knight (who had entered the game at 2B after Mike Lum had pinch-hit for Junior Kennedy earlier in the game) moving to SS. (This lends credence to the theory that Concepcion had a minor injury, or was otherwise unavailable.)
