Owings as a pitcher of hitter

We all know that he is a solid pitcher and hitter but which position would you rather he plays in Cinci? His ceiling as a pitcher is probably league average or a little better but he could be a potential plus bat. Which position would you have him choose?

Title was supposed to say pitcher or hitter.

Pre injury, he was at the very least, a capable 3-4 starter last season. I see no reason to give up on his pitching now, but it's nice to have his hitting as a fallback if he struggles or has arm issues.

Re: Owings as a pitcher of hitter

How many starting pitchers do the REDS currently have who have an ERA of 4.97 or less this year? That's the career ERA of this "kid" after 45 starts.

Answer: One....Volquez....his 2.86 over 24 starts this year and his last 3 starts of last year of 4.24

You let him pitch.

The formidable pitching this year by the REDS:

Arroyo 25 starts of 5.44
Volquez 24 starts of 2.86
Cueto 24 starts of 5.01
Harang 20 starts of 5.17
Fogg 10 starts of 7.98
Bailey 8 starts of 7.93
Belisle 6 starts of 7.28
Thompson 3 starts of 6.91

When you look at that and you get a chance to get a guy who "hasn't pitched well" and still has an ERA of 4.97 over his first 45 starts, I'd let him pitch and stick him into the rotation.

Exactly, shut him down for the rest of the year and hope he turns into what he was early this season, which was a damn good pitcher.

Let him pitch since pitching is needed to win big. If that doesnt work out then let me try hitting.

Re: Owings as a pitcher of hitter

all i know is, I made the trade in mlb 2k8 for Owings and in his first start, in an exhibition game against the Royals, we were being no hit into the 6th and he got the first hit of the game on a double in the right-center field gap.

he also pitched 7 with 3 hits, 1 ER, 5 K's.

So i guess that is a sign of god things to come
