Re: Another late-rounder, Matt Fairel, signs
[QUOTE=princeton;1722987]
out of top 12 picks in three drafts, only Travis Webb (a no. 8 pick) and Drew Bowman (a no. 5) were selected. Two lefties in 36 picks. Maybe this signals a new emphasis on LH pitching. Fairel's stats suggest that had he declared his intention to turn pro in advance of the draft, he would have gone around the fourth round. That would also be consistent with the money the Reds offered. Overall, I am impressed by the Reds ability to finesse two relatively high draft choices by pursuing kids that other clubs had given up on. |

What does Fairel throw?
Well, I watched him a lot at FSU and his fastball probably tops out at 89 or 90, but he's got very good breaking stuff and is very accurate with his pitches. Another year of school would have helped him, and by the time he came out, he'd be a top 2 or 3 round guy, maybe even a compensatory sandwich guy.
While I'm not saying he's the next Tom Glavine, he does remind me of him in that he hits the corners and gets very good control most of the time. He won't wow you on the gun, but the guy gets results. |

2. the last 2 years, we've been giving guys money that didn't match their talent if they have enough leverage. by extrapolation, if Fairel signed for 4th round money, it may mean that he has 12th round talent. |

Anytime I want to figure out how good a prospect might be I take your view and Doug's view and split the difference.

Hildenbrandt also features a low 90's fastball. Maybe not TOR stuff right now, but he is 19, so his stuff isn't exactly set in stone either.
