Re: It's Owings

Perfect timing...it's almost like the Reds are traveling out to Arizona to pick him up.

Re: It's Owings

If memory serves me, Owings got some mention in the National media 2-3 years ago as a pitcher with promise, worth watching for the future. (It seems looking at his numbers, like he's a Hitter)! Does anybody have an insight on what his strengths/weaknesses are? Does he have attributes that could turn out to be a good addition to the Reds?

I saw him pitch on TV a few times and was impressed. He throws hard and has a bulldog mentality. The scouting report on him is that he doesn't have good enough off speed pitches to be better than a back of the rotation pitcher.

But what impressed me was that he threw strikes and was very aggressive, kinda like a harder throwing, RH, Tom Browning.

He also could hit, he has a career .895 OPS!

He was injured the second half of this year, and his numbers when he was healthy were very strong. An ERA around 4, and a WHIP of around 1.2. So if he is healthy, he should be a strong contender for the #4-5 spots in the rotation. But who knows if he is healthy.

Re: It's Owings

It sounds like he won't be pitching anymore this year so he has the entire offseason to get healthy. I've seen him play before too and I think he's a pretty good pitcher with a great potential to help us out next year. A friend of mine watched him play when he was at Tulane and she's been a big fan for a long time. She said he's a really down to earth guy who also works hard at his baseball skills. I'm glad that he's now a Red and dang, he's also a pretty great hitter! A pitcher who can actually pinch hit for us too....go figure, LOL

Just a comment here...

If Owings can OPS around .750, he's adding roughly 1/3 run per game over the average pitcher. So take .33 off his ERA when you compare him to other pitchers.

You crazy man.

So his hitting makes up for his pitching? :

Re: It's Owings

And he just got the go ahead RBI double in the top of the 10th against his former team. What a first at bat for Owings. Maybe good things are ahead for him and the Reds. Now only for Coco to save this thing. 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth right now.

Re: It's Owings

I liked him before but now Micah Owings is one of my favorite players on the team, LOL

Good job Micah on getting that game winning hit!! Can you keep pinch hitting for the rest of the year?! LOL

Having him is like having an extra player on the bench.

micah owings

do u think the reds should give him 1 or 2 starts in left field , just so we get alittle more use from him rest of the season other then pinch hitting .

Re: micah owings

I've been saying it (to myself at least) since the trade happened, the kid is this team's wildcard for the next few seasons. He is obviously a raw talent, but will at some point be a useful talent to some major league club and I'm glad Jocketty has control of said talent.

I think the team will try him out as a starter but will not hesitate to convert him into a corner OF slot as soon as his pitching window is determined shut. He's the complete opposite of the type of player the Reds have drafted and pursued for so many years and for that reason alone it is refreshing to have a guy like this on the team.

Re: micah owings

i believe he will get every chance to be 5th starter next season but must say i would love to see him get a start or 2 in left field this year just to see him have a few more at bats besides pinch hitting.

Re: micah owings

Unbelievable. I was expecting Dunn to wreak havoc on his former team, and the new Red (Owings), wreaks havoc on his old team.

Hilarious. Good stuff for the media.
