Maddon will say "what if" all winter.
When your down 3-1 games in the World Series, it's do or die. You have to win or your done, there is no tomorrow if you don't win game 5, period.
With that being said, I cannot understand why Maddon did not go with his best stuff. Starting Shilds or even Price. He chose to stick with the bull pen, and the Phily's scored in the bottom of the 7th inning. Who cares about the starters in game 6 or 7. You have to win game 5. Let tomorrow take care of tomorrow. There is no game 6 if you don't win game 5. You got to win or lose with your best stuff. Maddon will think about this all winter.

I'm not about to second guess a manager that just took a team that was worst in baseball last year to the world series this year.

Re: Maddon will say "what if" all winter.
The pitchers spot was up the next inning. He thought he could get one good inning from a very reliable bullpen, pinch hit for him, and then go to Price. When Balfour gave up the run, all that was ruined.
His bullpen had been one of the best in the game all season, no reason not to trust it. |

I agree with this. The Rays will most likely be back, unless they have some misfortune to the extreme degree. He made the right calls all season long and deep into the postseason. He did his best and came up short to a more experienced team. If they ever do get back to the World Series, I like Maddon's odds next time.

Re: Maddon will say "what if" all winter.
One thing about society today is that there is always the need for finger pointing and blame. Sometimes its no one's fault, it is possible for one team to just beat the other. I simply can't see why Maddon should be brought up in a cause for the Rays losing a World Series 3-1 when hes one of the main reasons they got there.
