Reds hire David Bell as new Double-A manager

Another Bell joins Reds organization
New Double-A manager comes from Big Red family

By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- The Bell family may as well be baseball royalty in Cincinnati, and another member of the multi-generational Major League family has joined the Reds organization.

Former big league third baseman David Bell was named manager of the Reds' new Double-A affiliate, the Carolina Mudcats, on Friday. Bell is the son of former Reds player Buddy Bell and the grandson of Reds great Gus Bell. Brother Mike Bell played for the Reds in 2000.

This will be the 36-year-old Bell's first season as a Minor League manager. A third baseman for most of his 12 big league seasons, he played for the Indians, Cardinals, Mariners, Giants, Phillies and Brewers from 1995-2006. His stint in St. Louis from 1995-97 was under current Reds general manager Walt Jocketty.

The Bells are one of three families with three Major League generations, along with the Boones and the Hairstons.

Chris Bosio will return to be the Double-A pitching coach, the role he had when the affiliate was in Chattanooga last season. Ryan Jackson is the new hitting coach, which was the role he had at Class A Sarasota the past two seasons. Jimmy Mattocks was named as Carolina's athletic trainer.

I didn't know where to put this. Mods, feel free to move it to the minor league forum if you like.

Fantastic, I had the privilege of interviewing David Bell for my high school's (Moeller) newspaper and I can tell you that he is nothing but a grade A guy. I am sure he will instill great character into his team and he has a very high baseball IQ. I am very glad that he is involved in the Reds' organization.
