LINK FROM TOM BROWNING'S BOOK anyway back to the topic........ Instead of players I will nominate the entire 2003 season as the all-time greatest letdown. It was over-hyped for several years that the Reds were "rebuilding toward 2003", from whence they will be competitive.

Dan Driessen....not that he wasn't a good player, but he was suppose to adequately replace the Big Dog.

Re: Greatest Hype Greatest Letdown All Time Reds Team
Excellent selection. JimBo refused to trade him for Jr. and dealt away Mike Cameron.

Yes he had a solid career but definitely didnt adequately replace the Big Dog.

Re: Greatest Hype Greatest Letdown All Time Reds Team
Here is two that were traded for each other.
Drew Henson (He did it in two sports but made MILLION in the process) Willy-Mo Pena-I never thought he would be an all-star but thought he would run in 35+ fastballs a year. |

Re: Greatest Hype Greatest Letdown All Time Reds Team
Definitely Larson makes the list.
Don't forget about Rob Bell.. Trumpted as a future 20 game winner. Claussen was definitely overhyped too. Hector Carausco was hyped quite a bit too. Also, remember the spring training (I think 99) when Bowden claimed Bere was throwing 96 MPH. That guy was the master of hype ![]() I think Maj was way overhyped as well.

Re: Greatest Hype Greatest Letdown All Time Reds Team
IIRC, Dawkins was being floated as the potential principal in the trade, not the "in addition" guy, which was Perez's role.

Re: Greatest Hype Greatest Letdown All Time Reds Team
It was a long time ago, but I remember (perhaps incorrectly) that the Reds had a deal where Dimitri would go to Seattle and then Allen dragged his feet. When Bowden came back with Allen's ok, Seattle insisted on Cameron. Maybe part of the deal was also suffling minor leaguers too, I don't remember that much detail.
