No word yet on who the A's gave up....

At the very least, it keeps him out of the NL Central.

How about out of the NL entirely, at least for a year.

The Oakland Athletics have acquired star outfielder Matt Holliday in a trade with the Colorado Rockies, SI.com has learned. The players Colorado will receive are not yet known.

Holliday is due to become a free agent after the 2009 season. He has spent his entire five-year career with the Rockies, is a two-time All-Star and helped them reach the 2007 World Series. He batted .321 with 25 home runs and 88 RBIs in 2008 in 139 games. It was his fourth straight .300 season, but his power numbers represented a noticeable decline from the previous two seasons when he averaged 35 HRs and 125 RBIs while playing in at least 155 games both years.

Previously, the Phillies and Cardinals were among the teams reportedly pursuing a trade for Holliday, but the Cardinals pulled out of the running over the weekend.

Re: A's get Holliday

Quote:
The Cardinals won't be celebrating a Holliday before Thanksgiving. Or for that matter, anytime, according to general manager John Mozeliak. Mozeliak insisted Sunday that discussions involving Colorado Rockies left fielder Matt Holliday have ceased and that "nothing is imminent. That one's not happening -- at all." Irritated that details of his discussions with Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd had leaked, Mozeliak did not deny the seriousness of the talks but took exception to momentum assigned them. Mozeliak did not discuss specifics of his talks with the Rockies. However, Cardinals right fielder Ryan Ludwick remained a central name within the talks until their apparent breakdown. Misgivings existed within some quarters of the organization about committing multiple players for Holliday, who is eligible for free agency after next season while the arbitration-eligible Ludwick will make considerably less than Holliday's $13.5 million in 2009.

Re: A's get Holliday

Playing a year in Oakland will either cement his reputation of being a product of Coors Field, or put it to bed completely.

If he produces well in Oakland in 2009 it will net him a bigger contract for 2010 and beyond than he would get right now.

Re: A's get Holliday

It works both ways, I see. Haren gets turned in to a bucket of prospects, allowing the A's to be in a position of strength. I imagine if the A's are out of the hunt in '09, they'll try to flip him before the deadline. If they're in it, they'll hang on to him and get their picks after the season.

My guess is:

Sean Gallagher/Gio Gonzalez
Huston Street
Javier Herrera

Re: A's get Holliday

One thing to ponder is him being flipped before he even plays, the A's park is not a hitters park by any stretch, it suppresses power and has never been a RH power park accept for 2 guys, the franchise in Oakland has a surprisingly weak RH power history outside of the Bash Brothers.
