Statistically speaking: After getting in six games with Sarasota in the Florida State League, Alonso showed just what made him the No. 7 overall pick in the Draft in Hawaii. He finished ninth in average (.308), sixth in OBP (.419) and fifth in SLG (.510). That made his OPS of .929 the fourth-best in the winter circuit.

Scouting report: A pro at the plate, Alonso should be a run producer with good plate discipline and power. Showed power mostly to the middle and opposite field in college, but will learn to turn on pitches. He doesn't run well, but he doesn't clog the bases and he's just fine at first base defensively.

Upside potential: A middle-of-the-order run producer who hits for average and power.

Let's wait until he plays in the minor leagues before we rank him as a MLB prospect.I also think we should take the same stance as regards to players like Guillon and Duran. They may all be MLB prospects; I just want to see how they perform in the minors.

Maybe you have missed it, but Alonso spent a week in the FSL and got well over 100 PA in Hawaii in a premiere post season prospects league were he tore the league apart.

He did get some time in last year after he signed, but I' m not sure that was a large enough sample size to qualify. As for Hawaii, it was the winter leagues. I liked what I saw; I'm just saying I want him to do it at AA.

I guess.... but I think something needs to be put into his scouting reports and then when they match up perfectly with his playing time so far, even at ~150 PA in the minors, it lends more credit to both the scouting report and to the stats he has put up.

Its probably right in the middle somewhere. Pitchers parks, but a higher talent level than High A.

From Reds Hot Stove. They talk about finding a place to play Alonso. Here it is.

After commercial, the next person asked who was the Reds hottest prospect. Marty said the two names mentioned most often are Justin Turner and Chris Valaika. Thom mentioned Todd Frazier. Marty said Juan Francisco is hitting .351 8 HRs and 25 RBIs so far in winter ball. He said Valaika is batting .311, Turner is hitting .337, Frazier is hitting .295 with 3 HRs and 22 RBIs. Alonso is hitting 308 4 HRs 21 RBIs in 29 games. Marty think if he stays healthy he'll be an offensive stud but the Reds are going to have a problem figuring out where to play him. Thom said he can't wait to see these guys in ST. He's especially interested in Francisco.
