Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
I've got a three and a half year old golden retriever, reading this just tears me up:

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
One thing that has always distubed me.... why did the creator of earthly things make the lifespan of such a great animal so short? I am sure there is a good reason, but I have never been able to figure it out.

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
There's nothing sadder than that day when you look into your old dog's eyes and realize she has rounded the bend; that subtle look of bewilderment, like she just awoke from a long sleep. That is the moment my dogs truly pass from companion into the stage of needing my care. It's tough and I dread it, but at the same time I feel as though the last year or two of a dog's life, as burdensome as it is to me, is appropriate payment for a decade or more of unconditional acceptance.
I think god created dogs with the right lifespan- it teaches us through the cycle of love and loss to treasure the time we have with those who are close to us, both human or otherwise. It doesn't mean I look forward to it, but then life lessons are not always supposed to be easily learned.

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
I've read where dogs actually can smell cancer. Not sure if its being used yet as a diagnostic tool.
We had to put down our 11 yr. old lab Elsa last summer. It was the third time I've had to do this with a loyal and long-time companion and it still tears me up bad. Some things just aren't easy. The jungle drums for a new puppy are starting to beat loudly. I've posted this here before, but this a good column by Peter King about his dog... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/ins...02/01/21/mmqb/

I heard recently from some pundit- or somebody, somewhere- that gain is not possible without loss. And I can deal with that, I guess, when it comes to jobs, even friends- things that come in and out of your life. But our golden-lab might be one of the best friends I've ever had (along with super-cat Boss Kitty), and life without her makes me as sad as if I were to lose a close human being. It's always good to know you can bring a new one in, which eases the pain, but to go through the loss thing every 10 years or so is one of the worst parts of human existence.

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
With a few brief exceptions, my parents have had at least one pet running around the house as far back as I can remember. I asked Dad if this sort of thing ever gets any easier and he just shook his head. It's definitely one of those "wait a minute, why do *I* have to be the grownup?" moments.

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
One reason that makes some sense to me is that I'd hate to see that dog outlive his owner. Dogs live for their owners, and when they go, it's constant heartache and loneliness for the dog. Dogs do have short memories, but I don't think they forget the people that they spend every day of their lives looking up to. Perhaps a short life span guarantees that a dog never has to be without their owner for too long.

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
Good writing.
One of the toughest things I've ever had to do was to hold Remington, my black afghan hound and source of my 'handle' here, while he left this world. Dogs are here with us for what is a relatively short time vis a vie our lifespan but it's amazing the untold joy that they can bring us in that short time frame. I still carry a picture of Rem and will willingly show it to anyone that wants to indulge me. I can tell endless stories about him and I still laugh at random times when I think of some the things that he did. Saying 'goodbye' is obviously hard but never having said 'hello' is even worse. The joy these animals bring to us is one of the greatest things in life. Rem |

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
Several years ago I got myself a pup, had him four days, he spend 3 in the hospital and died on the 7th overall day. Not fun.

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
Stephen, did you buy your dog from a reputable breeder, or a store like pet city?
Sorry to hear about that by the way, that's horrible.

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
Bought it from a breeder. The dog got sick with parvo, didn't have much of a chance. Crazy thing was the vet said we wouldn't get another dog for a year due to the fact that the disease will still be living in the carpet, grass, etc.

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
Similar thing happened to my neighbor. They bought a dog from a reputable breeder, and in a couple of weeks it came down with parvo. They got lucky, they got her to the hospital in the nick of time. I think she spent around a week there, but came home and eventually recovered. This was just after having a dog hit by a car, losing two dogs that quick would've been terrible.

Re: Bill Simmons Eulogizes His Dog
Stephen,
Sorry to hear it was parvo, a terrible virus for dogs. I just hope the dog didn't contract the virus from the breeder. And yes, the virus sticks around for a long time, in some cases more than a year. Bad luck, but nontheless I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate situation. I guess I'm luckier than I realise sometimes, in that all my pups have had relatively healthy lives.
