Texas Rangers scrap two-toned helmet

SURPRISE, Ariz. — The much-maligned multicolor batting helmets the Texas Rangers planned to debut this season will never see the field.Team president Nolan Ryan said the Rangers scrapped the idea because the team wouldn’t be wearing red on the road, therefore eliminating the need for the red-and-blue helmets. It didn’t help that the two-toned helmet was panned by just about everyone.

"The reaction wasn’t good on it and we were surprised," Ryan said. "That weighed on the decision because they weren’t well received."

The Rangers will wear red helmets for 16 home games in red uniforms. They will wear blue helmets in the others.

Tactically, these helmets would have been great for Texas. From straight on, the batter would look like he had a blue antenna on a red background. What pitcher can throw a good pitch when he is laughing?
