Re: Are you worried about Swine Flu?

I think it's blown way out of proportion because a good crisis can be exploited for ratings or influence...

Even so, I notice I've been more aggravated lately at my coworkers for not washing their hands.

An influenza strain that originated from pigs. The Press is making it sound like HIV. This is another flu strain and for the vast majority of people who get it, will recover just like any other flu.

Oh. Well, I've done absolutely nothing to protect myself from any kind of flu, especially HIV, and I'm just as healthy as I've ever been. I can't think of a single reason to be worried. If I ever have kids, I'm not going to let them watch the news unless they're old enough to acknowledge that it's a comedy show.

All the soda from Whole Foods has cane sugar in it. Good stuff.

Swine flu makes for a news fire storm, but I'm not that worried. Hypothetically, any bug that hops from animals to huimans has the potential to get 1918 Spanish Flu bad, but I don't that will happen this time.

I'm as afraid of Swine Flu as I am of West Nile, Mad Cow, Killer African Bees, etc...

Re: Are you worried about Swine Flu?

If it were flu season, this strain would have better camaflouge. Lots of people got West Nile and never knew it.

Also, I'm guessing that Mexico doesn't have a firm grasp on how many people have caught it, making it seem more deadly. If 150 have died out 100,000 cases, its not particularly deadly.

My fear will remain focused on the Yellowstone Caldera.

Yes. The global spread of swine flu, a pandemic, is highly likely, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday and raised its alert level to Phase 5, the next-to-highest level in the worldwide warning system.
Phase 5 has not been declared before. Phase 6 means a pandemic is under way.

Re: Are you worried about Swine Flu?

This whole story is just more of the news media doing what they do best spreading fear. Like tonight one of the Dayton stations kept running a thing at the bottom the screen advertising their news story coming up later tonight. It said swine flu cases are popping up all over the Miami Valley. The actual story on the news is there have been no confirmed cases of the swine flu in our area but when someone reports they have a bad case of the flu they are doing background checks to see if it could be swine flu. So if you would read their news hype you would think there were cases popping up all over when in reality there are no confirmed cases in our area.

This is why I can't understand the media bashing. The media shouldn't be reporting this so heavily? It's unprecedented. If anything I think the media has been pretty muted, compared to other crises (real or trumped up).

That being said I'm still not too worried, but if we get to Phase 6, then I will start thinking about it a lot more.

I actually think the avian flu not turning out too bad could work against us here. People aren't going to take a real flu threat seriously because they've heard "wolf" cried too often.

Probably this blows over, if it doesn't it will hurt. Either way it's certainly news.
