Didn't a position player pitch last year... like Ryan Freel maybe?

I don't think so, but I cannot imagine that.

Re: Recent Reds who pitched (Position Players)
I would have loved to see Bench and his cannon of an arm take the mound.

Re: Recent Reds who pitched (Position Players)
I remember Concepcion pitching. He struck out a batter on a BIG looping curveball and walked off the mound with a huge grin on his face. I'll always remember that.

Re: Recent Reds who pitched (Position Players)
I don't think he was ever able to persuade them to let him do it, but Concepcion always wanted, in a late-season game after the pennant race had been decided, to play a different position, including pitcher, for each of the nine innings.

Re: Recent Reds who pitched (Position Players)
He struck out Franklin Stubbs to end the inning, and got a standing ovation from the Dodger Stadium crowd.

Re: Recent Reds who pitched (Position Players)
Yep that's it. Good memory. I also remember Davey getting tossed in San Francisco. Made a big production of it. Might be my favorite ejection next to Carl Everett head butting Ron Kulpa. I can still see Davey ripping the door open that led back to the tunnel to the clubhouse at Candlestick. Good times.

Re: Recent Reds who pitched (Position Players)
So Tovar started the game, and gave up no runs, and his team eventually won a one-run game.
Campaneris gave up one run, and his team lost by two runs in the 10th. Without the run Camapneris gave up, his team would have won in 9. That's taking a risk, isn't it? |

Re: Recent Reds who pitched (Position Players)
I didn't know Tovar did it against the A's, with Campaneris at short. I wonder if their paths ever crossed, with an evil eye exchanged. Or maybe Campy threw the bat at him while he was pitching. Those are some crazy box score lines.
Of course, everyone here knows that the last non-pitcher to take the mound for the Reds was in '07, when Eric Milt...Nah. Never mind. Too easy. |

Re: Recent Reds who pitched (Position Players)
Did anyone else notice that Weathers appeared in the last two games that a position player took the mound (both as a Red). Weathers was only here for half a season that year (if even), and didn't come back to the Reds til 2005. Weathers is responsible.

Re: Recent Reds who pitched (Position Players)
Did you see what David DID in that game against the Giants...I don't think even HE wants to notice that he was in that game. 0.2 ip / 6 hits / 8 ER / 3 bb. Good lord.

Re: Recent Reds who pitched (Position Players)
Besides one great 8 shut out inning start, Weathers was awful for the Reds that season sporting a 6.21 ERA in 62.1 IP and a 1.81 WHIP. Once he went to the brewers he was terrific with a 3.21 ERA in 47.2 IP and a 1.22 WHIP.
