Re-do a draft - 2002

You thought the weekend would never end, but it has and now it's time for re-do a draft.

Today we're doing the 2002 draft. I hear this Gruler kid out in Oakley, CA is the next Tom Seaver. We're going 30 picks here and everybody taken in the 2002 draft is eligible, regardless if they signed. There's no formal picking order, whoever posts gets to make the next selection. Posters can make multiple picks, just don't make two selections in a row.

Anyone selected in the draft for the year in question is eligible. How he was rated prior to the draft should not be considered. The only considerations are how he has played to date and what kind of future you think he has. We're pretending we've got a time machine that takes us back to draft day 2002 with the benefit of knowing everything we know today.

Let's keep the current picks listed with each new pick and then just bold the new selection. For instance:

1. Dude A
2. Dude B
3. Dude C
4. Dude D
5. New Dude

With the benefit of hindsight I get to choose between the two things I'd be most loath to touch on draft day - prep pitchers and prep catchers. Tough choice in this case. Here's the first pick:

1. Brian McCann

I was between Greinke and McCann. Oddly, the amount of innings Greinke didn't throw at ages 22 and 23 might be the thing that allowed him to get to where he is in perfect health. I like his chances to throw 200+ IP for the next five years a lot better than Hamels or Kazmir.

I just happened to get in early and look up the 2002 draft list. Had this been may of 08 Greinke may have been a selection in the 20's now he could have gone #1.

What I found interesting was this was the money ball draft. I went back and looked through the A's selections and saw only a couple of names I knew in their first 30 or so draft picks. Neither Swisher or Blanton are anything special but they did make it to the show and Tehan was also a name that made it to the show. One Levi Burton was drafted later in the draft, but other than those 4 names I didn't recognize anyone of substance. What I did find ironic though ol' leatherpants blew the A's out of the water in the draft, but he failed to sign a key player. I would take a draft that produced Votto and Markakis any day of the week. It sure would be nice to have an OF right now of Bruce, Markakis and Taveras.
