Re: This Date In Reds History (6/1/09): Past Lineups
30 years ago (1979), a 4-2 win at Riverfront vs. the Phillies.
Philadelphia Pete Rose 1b Tim McCarver c Mike Schmidt 3b Greg Luzinski lf Del Unser rf Garry Maddox cf Ramon Aviles 2b Steve Carlton p Bud Harrelson ss Cincinnati Ken Griffey rf Junior Kennedy 2b Dave Concepcion ss George Foster lf Johnny Bench c Ray Knight 3b Arturo DeFreites 1b Paul Blair cf Bill Bonham p WP: Doug Bair (3-0) LP: Steve Carlton (6-6) Sv: Pedro Borbon (2) HR: PHI - Del Unser (1), Garry Maddox (7). Pete Rose made his first appearance at Riverfront Stadium since leaving the Reds and joinng the Phillies. Steve Carlton pitched a complete-game eight-hitter with 6 K's in a losing effort for the Phils. I liked the Phillies' decision to bat the pitcher eighth in this game, as Carlton was actually a stronger hitter than the #9 batter, SS Bud Harrelson.
