There are a couple of hotels near the stadium, but it's in a really rough part of town.
If you have the money, I'd stay in midtown and take Marta to underground and take the shuttle over.

You don't stay "near" Turner Field if you want to enjoy aspects outside of your room and the stadium.

I hate the DDN website interface so I'm not gonna do a search for you, but I know in the last year or so McCoy mentioned the hotel the Reds stay at in ATL. I think it was the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead...but thats a guess. I'm not much help, just wanted to give up a heads up if you wanted to do the legwork.

Thanks for the heads up kaldaniels, and if I weren't a poor school teacher I would love to stay at the Ritz Carlton.
The hotel we are considering is in the same area as the Ritz, however---in the Buckhead area. Anyone know if that area is safer than staying closer to Turner Field? It says that Buckhead is just about 4 miles or so from midtown. |

I'd suggest you either stay in Midtown or Buckhead, near one of the MARTA rail stations on the North/South line. Personally, I've never much cared for Buckhead. If you stay in Midtown, Piedmont Park is just a few blocks away. The High Museum is at Peachtree & 16th. Unfortunately, you'll be in town after the Monet exhibit, but before the Da Vinci exhibit. And the Georgia Aquarium is outstanding. It's also worth noting that the weekend the Reds are in town is the same weekend as the Alabama - Virginia Tech Kickoff Game at the Ga Dome (9/5/09 - 8pm). GT kicks off their season at 1pm on 9/5 as well. And according to the Philips Arena website, there's a Britney Spears concert on Fri 9/4. In other words, and I can't emphasize this enough to anyone coming to town for those games, you really want to be able to take MARTA to/from the games. With everything going on that weekend, traffic will be bad, even by Atlanta standards. And I'd go ahead and line up a room sooner rather than later. You can always cancel if you find a better deal. PM me if you want any more suggestions (ie, places to eat). |

as others have said, don't stay near the stadium. Mid-town to Buckhead is your best bet, probably somewhere on Peachtree St (tons of hotels, but w/ so much in town that weekend, grab your room quick)

DON"T STAY AT THE EMBASSY SUITES DOWNTOWN!
Went there for the Sugar Bowl in '06 to watch Slaton destroy Greg Blue and his pretenders at UGA and within one hour of parking our car valet at the Embassal Suites, our car had been broken into, and the the DVD player had been stripped out. It was a professional job. Guy came in with some sort of drill and unscrewed everything in there and lifted it. Followed the wiring all the way to the front console and ripped all that out too. Could tell he knew what he was doing. Inside job for sure, too. There was no forced entry, and the car was parked at the very back of the lot. Lucky for us, the tickets were not stolen. Disaster of a trip (besides the actual game). |
