Re: Wed August 12 - Minor League Updates

I was hopingthe Phillies would have taken a liking to Harang and we could have worked a deal around the dealine involving Taylor.

Would've loved an OF next year of:

LF Taylor
CF Stubbs/Dickerson
RF Bruce/Heisey

or (if they dealt Stubbs)

LF Taylor
CF Heisey/Dickerson
RF Bruce/Ballentein

Pipedream, I know, but it was a nice one.

Re: Wed August 12 - Minor League Updates

Ugly, ugly game from Stubbs. Ever since I saw Taveras' minor league line and how eerily similar it was to Stubbs, I have had this awful feeling.

Stubbs .270/.366/.404/.770
Taveras .288/.370/.361/.731

Sure, Stubbs is slugging a little bit better and will always have power potential on his side, but he is only slugging .369 this year as a 24-year old in AAA.

Two can play this game.

Stubbs .270/.366/.404/.770
Kenny Lofton Minor League Stats- .300/.370/.379
Grady Sizemore Minor League Stats- .289/.377/.411

Re: Wed August 12 - Minor League Updates

Boiler, I really hope he follows the career paths of Grady Sizemore and Kenny Lofton. I have always been optimistic about Stubbs going into the past couple months. However, the Reds refusal to promote Stubbs when the time was perfect casted doubts in my mind. He has just been so up and down over his career.

BTW, where did you pull Lofton's minor league stats? I tried baseball-reference and it did not have any on-base percentage numbers.

The caveat to Sizemore's numbers are that he did it at a much younger age (his last minor league season he was 21). That definately needs to be included when comparing Stubbs' minor league stats to Sizemore.

Sizemore was playing in the majors when he was 21. BIG difference.

I've been likening Stubbs to Taveras for a while now. I hope I'm wrong (or better yet, I hope they trade Stubbs while he still has value.)

Re: Wed August 12 - Minor League Updates

Offensive comparisons aside, Stubbs is a much better defender.

Juan Castro and Paul Janish were/are great defenders at premium positions as well.

The difference is in the power. Taveras has never projected to hit for power. It just won't happen because of how small he is. Stubbs on the flip side has a much better chance to hit for power because of his size. Whether it comes or not is another thing, but Stubbs certainly has shown flashes that its in there. Willy hasn't come close to threatening any game with his power.

That's true. I (along with everyone else) just keep hoping and wishing for Stubbs to translate some of that "power projection" into actual results, and so far it's not happening. Usually if a guy has shown no signs of actual game power at any level by the age of 25, it's not a good sign.

I'll bet right now Stubbs doesn't appear in more than 50 games for the Reds next year. And if that is the case, ouch.

It'll be WT and Dickerson. Dickerson is still cheap and under the Reds control. WT hasn't been DFA'd yet, so he's with the team next year too. The rest of the OF is probably Bruce, Wlad and one of Gomes/Nix.

Personally I don't think Stubbs is an upgrade over Dickerson. So he'll have to bust the door down, and he's being lapped by Heisey.

I don't know that the Reds FO believes the bolded part.
