Dodgers Acquire Jon Garland (and Thome)

The Dodgers have acquired Jon Garland, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman.

SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Dodgers have acquired Jim Thome. The White Sox will receive infielder Justin Fuller in the deal, and are sending cash to LA that will presumably cover part, or all or Thome's salary according to Mark Gonzales of The Chicago Tribune.

The Dodgers were reportedly seeking a run-producing bat off the bench, and Thome would certainly fit that description.

The White Sox will receive infielder Justin Fuller in the Thome deal. Fuller, 26, was the Dodgers 11th round pick in 2006, and is hitting .254-.340-.418 in 205 at-bats for High Class-A Inland Empire.

MLB.com's Steve Gilbert says the Diamondbacks will receive a player to be named in the Garland deal.

Tuesday 12:10am: Gilbert says Arizona is paying the rest of Garland's salary for this year, as well as the buyout of his 2010 option. Sweet deal for the Dodgers.
LA adds a starter to the rotation without adding one penny to the payroll.

Novel idea. Sounds like a plan for Cincinnati, but we're so close to contending it wasn't needed.

Why would the Reds give up any prospect for a rental player?

It's something contending teams do.

While it may be a novel idea for the bottom teams to do it, it's novel because it's dumb.

I don't see Thome doing well as a PH for the Dodgers.

I'm surprised the White Sox would pay the rest of Thome's salary in order to get a 26 yr old class A player. Apparently the Dodgers put in a claim for him; they should have said "here, he's yours."

You're right,it makes no sense. But It says "part or all" of Thome's salary. You have to assume it's "part" and that part is really, really small.

Thome should be playing 1B for the Dodgers.

He'd be a significant offensive boost over Loney, that's for sure.

Thome was quoted as telling the Dodgers GM he could only play 1b in an emergency, but would be willing to help in any way he could. Can't imagine him playing D at this stage, but seems like a great guy to have around.

Interesting. So he really will be nothing more than a pinch-hitter for them down the stretch.

Supposedly Kenny Williams has offerred any number of White Sox players to any team willing to take them after the debacle in New York. Jermaine Dye may be available for less than Homer Bailey.
