Ambush at Fort Hood
Amazing this was carried out by a Major in the U.S. army. I have a couple buddies who served in Iraq, and news of this has them all kinds of pissed off. Anyway, here's the story:

Very sad and tragic. I can't help thinking, just when you thought you had seen it all someone ups the ante so to speak...

An unfortunate update; one of the 31 wounded died.

Terrible. My grandfather was a DS at Ft. Hood and always spoke fondly of the place. I just can't imagine what it is like there today...the community is very close knit.

Re: Ambush at Fort Hood
when i heard about this tragedy last night, i kept hearing General Patton screaming in my head; "This is no way for a soldier to die."
Glory to the Brave.

Re: Ambush at Fort Hood
I simply praise the brave actions of female police officer Kimberly Munley who was not only wounded herself, but pumped four bullets into this guy and possibly saved countless more lives.
http://www.kmbc.com/fort-hood-shooti...94/detail.html KILLEEN, Texas -- A civilian police officer is being praised for taking down a man suspected of opening fire on fellow soldiers at Fort Hood when she shot him in the torso. Authorities said Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was struck four times by Kimberly Munley who was wounded herself. Authorities said Munley fired on the suspect just three minutes after the gunfire erupted. The gunman then spun around and charged at Munley with a gun in each hand, said her boss, Chuck Medley, director of emergency services at Fort Hood. He said Munley shot Hasan in the upper torso, allowing officers to take him into custody. Munley, who was shot in the thighs and wrist, was recovering Friday at a hospital. Munley's boss, Chuck Medley, told The Associated Press on Friday that Hasan then spun around and charged at her with a gun in each hand. The 35-year-old Munley is from Pennsylvania, used to be in the Army and is married to a Fort Bragg, N.C. soldier.

Re: Ambush at Fort Hood
I would imagine that Hasan is disappointed that he did not accomplish what looks like an attempt at assisted suicide. I try to kill folks, surely they will kill me, then God can't accuse me of killing myself. Of course, there's that whole murder issue....

Re: Ambush at Fort Hood
Good post GAC. As someone who has seen and impacted first hand by a civilian force take over/supplement military policing on military installations it's awesome to see that they are as capable as their military counterparts.
As for the potential for the killer to be locked away for years and maybe be release. It's a possibility. But the Death Penalty will be sought and recent military trial history points to a death sentence, in my opinion. |

Re: Ambush at Fort Hood
Not opposed to the death penalty; but when I see "unique" situations like this, where the murderer seems to be on a suicide mission where he wants to be killed, and when he thinks he's going to receive some sort of reward in the after-life as a martyr, then I say "don't give him the satisfaction, and do the opposite." Postpone his "reward", and lock him up in a tiny cell, and let him live out the rest of his days in isolation to live with his actions.

Re: Ambush at Fort Hood
I consider this terrorism, terrorism of the worst kind, from within. I find it slightly disturbing that the Army was unable to see the warning signs or just didn't react in the proper manner. I heard a report on NPR how Hasan gave a speech at Walter Reed about Muslims fighting Muslims over in the middle east. Warning bells should have gone off but they didn't. I guess it didn't matter that in WWI and WWII men in opposite fox holes were praying to the same God. Hopefully something positive comes from this tragedy.

Whatever this man did, we are still a country of laws and due process.
