Kind of the opposite of the thread about critically acclaimed movies you didn't like. What about the ones that didn't receive a whole lot of praise from critics but that you liked?

The main one on my list that comes to mind among the recent years' crop of movies is Flyboys. I really enjoyed it and I don't remember it getting a whole lot of critical attention, except for a rather negative review I read. The review criticized it for being "overly patriotic" or some such nonsense, but I tend to like films that are rather black and white with clearly defined good guys and bad guys, and this appealed to that side of me. Every year I find myself enjoying a couple films that the critics either ignore or don't speak highly of. I don't think I'm the only one.

Waterworld was not great but it was not as bad as advertised.

I thought Australia was a pretty good movie, but critics mostly panned it. I rarely like a movie critics didn't give good reviews in general. There are plenty that they like that I didn't like, but not the other way around very often.

Another one is the Pixar movie Cars. I loved it and still enjoy watching it with my son. That's one I never understood the dislike for.

Both of Steve Martin's Pink Panther movies. Okay, I get it; he's not Peter Sellers. Now how about judging the movie on its own merits?

ORH, you and I are the only people I know of who liked Flyboys. I saw it when it came out and later bought the DVD, but I haven't been able to get anyone else interested in the film. I enjoyed it.

Too many horror movies to name fit in this category. Toxic Avenger, for one. Shoot, pretty much the entire Troma catalog. Horror movies are the critics' redheaded stepchild, but they frequently miss the spirit of many of them.

I've mentioned it before but Project X with Matthew Broderick and Helen Hunt is a guilty favorite of mine. The film has plot holes. It's swelling score does much of the heavy dramatic lifting and it's about monkey's flying planes, so I'm not go way out on a limb defending it.

But it's also a sly indictment of institutions using chimpanzees as clever proxys.

Holy crap there's a movie I'm pretty sure I saw multiple times as a child and haven't thought about in 15-20 years.

I just liked 'em more than the critics, didn't nominate them for oscars.
