He is very scrappy and certainly knows how to play the game the right way.

on the plus side: he can play 3B/SS/2B. he hits left handed. had an OPS+ of 105 last year. on the minus side: 39 years old. career OPS+ of 81. IF the Reds can't get a guy like Itzuris and IF its a cheap 1 year deal I would be ok with it. Not excited enough to run out and buy season tickets, just ok with it.

just spray a little deodorizer and shine him up a bit and he'll be ready to go ... every day.

Re: 2009 Winter Meetings thread
The Indians named Jon Nunnally their new hitting coach. Wow, now there's a name I haven't heard in a while.
Nunnally posted an .823 OPS (111 OPS+) in 1,048 career plate appearances. I didn't realize he hit that well in the majors. Last edited by OnBaseMachine; 12-09-2009 at 04:42 PM. |

Re: 2009 Winter Meetings thread
Meetings Day III, Part II Posted by jfay December 9th, 2009, 2:50 pm We just completed our session with Walt Jocketty. We did it early because he has to be at the scout of the year banquet. The Reds’ own Gene Bennett is being honored as the Midwest Scout of the Year. Congrats to Geno. He’s been with the Reds since the Bob Howsam days. Great guy, great scout.
Jocketty did not give us a lot because not a lot is happening. Here’s the highlights: –The Reds have talked to the agent for Craig Counsell. He fits the utility-player-who-can-play-short role. Counsell, by the way, is good friends with Thom Brennaman. Things like that can be a factor. –Nothing new on the Jonny Gomes front. –The Reds will almost assuredly be at 40 as far as the 40-man roster going into the Rule 5. That means they won’t take anyone. –The Reds have not talked with the Angels. Maicer Izturis, a perfect fit for the Reds’ needs, is rumored to be available. (See previous post). –Jocketty downplayed the Reds’ interest in Jamey Carroll. “The problem is he hasn’t played short much lately,” Jocketty said. “We like him as a player, but I don’t know if he’s fit.” There you have it. But boring stuff, eh? Jocketty knows. “There really isn’t a lot going on with the old Redlegs,” he said. “It’s pretty much the same. We’ve talked to more agents than clubs. We’re still in the same mode: We’re looking for a hitter and an infielder, preferably a left-handed hitter who can play short.” I’d bet dollars to donuts the Reds leave here without doing a thing. “I’d tell you stay to stay by your phones,” Jocketty told the scribes as we departed, “but there’s really no reason to.” |

Re: 2009 Winter Meetings thread
It's been relatively quiet for just about all the teams this year. I can't remember the last time things were this quiet during the winter meetings. It's kind of eerie.

Re: 2009 Winter Meetings thread
Wake me up when it's March.
My guess is Counsell will end up getting the bulk of the starts at SS if he's signed. |

Re: 2009 Winter Meetings thread
So we haven't brought anything up through our farm and we have nothing that will help us? Yikes, we are a bleak group, aren't we?
