Re: Baseball Prospectus Q&A with Chris Buckley on Aroldis Chapman signing

After reading this, I feel more comfortable that the Reds front office knows what they are doing and are envisioning what this team will be like three to five years from now. Seems like better days are on the horizon....and when was the last time we could say that?

From what I've seen of this guy, he looks like a young Dontrelle Willis. Buckley is right, the Reds don't have much of a chance of getting a talented lefty like this using conventional methods and I like that they realize the value of a LH starting Pitcher. Aside from SS I've listed a lefty starter as this team's next biggest need, but...

let their be no doubt about it, this is a splurge. After hearing about this my thought was "I'm glad he's a Red and I'm glad it wasn't my money."

Per BP, please do not post any full length articles from their site on here; instead, please post the link and an excerpt.

Re: Baseball Prospectus Q&A with Chris Buckley on Aroldis Chapman signing

It was exciting to read the process by which the club went about pursuing Chapman and subsequently becoming the club that got him. It was thorough and then some.

Likewise, if I'm understanding the financial structure of this deal, we're told that the bonus will come out of the budget for signing draftees and free agents. With that, I'm guessing that budget only takes the initial $1.5M hit this year and the balance is spread out through those subsequent years. Does that sound like a reasonable interpretation? If so, that bears out what Buckley said about still having money for the draft and other international signings.

As much as we've bemoaned the financial dealings of this club, it strikes me that we have some astute money men, if you will, who have partitioned out funds for the various aspects of player development and acguisitions, that hopefully bode well for the club. I think the Rolen restructuring is another example of creative thinking along these lines.

A very hopeful article.

The Willis comparison ends at the wide hips from what I've seen.

Isn't Dontrelle's delivery really wacky in a way that Chapman's just isn't? I can see the comparison in terms of build and the fact that they are lefties, but it ends there IMO.

You are correct. Chapman's delivery is MUCH better mechanically.
