Reds sign Jose Arredondo to minor league deal
Per John Fay's twitter:
#Reds sign RHP Jose Arredondo to minor league deal. Was 10-2 with a 1.62 ERA in '08. He'll have Tommy John soon http://twitter.com/johnfayman This is an excellent signing, IMO. He won't help the Reds in 2010 but he'll be back by 2011. He's coming off a bad season probably due to elbow problems but he had a terrific rookie season in 2008 with a 1.62 ERA and 22 BB/55 K in 61 innings. He's still only 25 (turns 26 in late March) and has nasty stuff. Very nice low risk-high reward signing by the Reds. Last edited by OnBaseMachine; 01-22-2010 at 04:58 PM. |

Sounds like it. Obviously there's always a risk, but I see this as not unlike the Gant signing. We'll rehab him and hopefully bear the fruit of that investment. Smart signing, sounds like.

Yes, but with Tommy John surgery, he should be an even better pitcher than before

Reds sign Arredondo
Posted by jfay January 22nd, 2010, 4:51 pm The Reds signed right-hander Jose Arredondo to a minor league deal. Basically, it’s signing for 2011. Arredondo will have “Tommy John” surgery shortly. “He’s a young guy with a power arm,” Walt Jocketty said. “We think he’ll fit in our bullpen when he’s healthy. We’re trying to stockpile those power arms.” Arredondo, 25, went 10-2 with a 1.62 ERA in 52 games in 2008. He slipped to 2-3 with 6.00 ERA last season in 43 games. He dealt with elbow problems all season. http://cincinnati.com/blogs/reds/ |

I think it bears mentioning that Jocketty has experience with this before. See Chris Carpenter.

Re: Reds sign Jose Arredondo to minor league deal
If this pans out, this could be huge. The guy is a hellava pitcher when healthy, wicked stuff.
I'm surprised it only took a minor league deal. I assumed someone would be willing to hide him on their 40 man roster for a year or two. He may have been attracted to the Reds due to the Chapman signing, or for similar reasons why Chapman was attracted to the Reds.

I was wanting the Reds to target this kid in a deal for an Angels SS last year. I like this signing.

Re: Reds sign Jose Arredondo to minor league deal
Hopefully getting booted from the Angels will improve his attitude, but either way, his potential is undeniable. Good signing.
