Re: Mark Mulder Retires

Danny Haren (and extras) for Mark Mulder is quite the bad mark on our GM's past resume.

Remember when Mulder, Hudson and Zito were supposed to bring the title to Oakland? That is a group of great pitchers when they were on their games.

Re: Mark Mulder Retires

In 05 Mulder went 16-8, started 32 games, and threw over 200 innings. Its pretty fair to say that without Mulder the Cards may not have won the Central that season.

Granted Haren was a high price to pay, I would pay a much higher price as a Reds fan for a WS championship.

Yep, add Rich Harden and they were the big four.

Those three outside of Harden might be the closest to ever matching Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz in terms of overall talent.

Maybe I'm an extreme optimist but I've got my fingers crossed that 3 of the 4 of Cueto,Chapman,Volquez, and Bailey might at the least give that Oakland group a run for their money.

You've heard of TINSTAAPP (There Is No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect)?

I posit: TINSTAAPWDALTD (There is No Such Thing As A Pitcher Who Deserves A Long Term Deal)

Let's not forget the Florida trio: Burnett, Dempster and Penny. Maybe not as successful but certainly had a lot of hype.

I counter with the Mets' triumvirate of Paul Wilson, Jason Isringhausen, and Bill Pulsipher. In terms of hype, they had it in spades.

I wonder how much their success in Oakland (and lackthereof away from there) had to do with the Athletics' training facilities.

Kind of like how there may have been more to the the Bagwell / Larry Andersen trade debacle than first realized.
