Who's had a root canal?

I scheduled a root canal on April 5th which actually is Opening Day and my birthday but I didn't realize how painful they can be after the procedure and I don't wanna be in pain at the game so I'm gonna try to reschedule. My question is how long will it take for my mouth to be pain free, will it really hurt THAT bad right after the numbing wears off and when the procedure takes place will it be painful? Thanks.

Re: Who's had a root canal?

First off make sure you're going to a specialist. They're very expensive no matter what so you might as well go to someone who does it right and quickly. The quicker he does it the less chance you'll have for an infection or post operative soreness. It generally is done in less than an hour

Expect the tooth to be sore for about 3 days afterwards. It'll mainly be soreness to chewing not hot and cold sensitivity. This is due to inflammation so take aspirin or Ibuprofen be forehand and immediately after. If you stay on that for 48-72 hours then it's likely that's all the pain meds you'll need.

I have had several root canals and never really had much pain afterwards.

Re: Who's had a root canal?

I've had two root canals (one when I was younger and one a few years ago and they were both on molars) and I didn't have many problems with either of them. If they offer you a prescription for pain meds, take it and then make sure to take the medicine on a regular basis once you get home. You shouldn't have too much pain from it if you take that medicine. You won't be able to chew much of anything there for a while and more than likely, you'll only have a temperary covering over it anyway so chewing would be out of the question anyway. I had to go back later to get the crowns put on but that was pretty easy and for the most part pain free too. It shouldn't be too bad for you but MAKE SURE you take that pain medicine. I was diligent about taking it and I never really had any pain after either procedure. Good luck!

BTW-I found it much more painful to have a tooth pulled than it was to get either root canal. I got my wisdom teeth pulled when I was in college and another tooth pulled a couple of years ago and I had way more pain with both of those then than I did with either root canal. Go figure, LOL

Thanks for all the advice guys. And yeah it's expensive alright. It's over 1,800 dollars total. There also doing something else but I forget what it is, that seperate procedure is 848.00 haha. The sad part is my job has great dental insurance but doesn't kick in until after a year. I'v had the job for 7 months. The pain is just too much right now.

Re: Who's had a root canal?

I have horrible teeth (as well as a horrible jaw), but I've never had to have a root canal.

Good Luck!

You'll probably have a root canal, buildup or post, and a crown as part of that $1800 but the rootcanal is the part that'll get you out of pain. Talk to your dentist. You may be able to wait on the crown until your insurance kicks in

Re: Who's had a root canal?

I had a root canal with no painkillers or numbing agents. It was so easy I stopped the dentist when he was filling the hole up to ask him if that was it.

Hole?

All my Root canels involved the tooth being ground down to a small core after the roots were removed and then I had replacment tooth while they made the crown.

That procedure(s) are not recommended without pain killers, I've never heard of anyone but Dustin Hoffman in The Marathon Man getting his teeth worked on without pain relief.

Re: Who's had a root canal?

My tooth just broke today. My Dentist only works Monday-Wednesday with half a day on Thursday.

Guess I'll be losing some weight this weekend.

The tooth that I had the root canal in was already chipped so he drilled a hole in the cap/tooth and just yanked the root out. I questioned him and he said the root was dead so thus no pain when yanking it out. I had this my senior year in high school which was 20 years ago and it is still just capped and the tooth is still white.

Re: Who's had a root canal?

I had a root canal a couple years ago. I don't remember it being too painful.

I have horrible teeth. I've had about four teeth pulled in the last two years, including three at one time. I bled like crazy that night. I remember waking up at 4:00 in the morning with blood all over my pillow and running down my chest and stomach. I got up to go to the bathroom to cleanup and as I was standing at the sink, I passed out and hit my head on the wall. I'm actually having some problems with my teeth right now but I'm too afraid to go back to the dentist.

Crazy, I've never heard of it done that way.
