In the top of the second inning, Reds manager Sparky Anderson sent Dan Driessen to the plate to pinch-hit for 3B John Vukovich. Nothing was physically wrong with Vukovich--Sparky just felt that he needed more offense in that situation. Vukovich was noticably upset about the decision. Dodgers starter and former Giants great Juan Marichal made his final appearance in this game.

IIRC, this is the game that Jim Maloney ruptured his achilles tendon. He was never the same. Too bad. Had he kept it up, he might be in Cooperstown. Best Red's pitcher of my lifetime.

Sparky and Vukovich weren't exactly buddies after this or before either. It was detailed pretty good in the book The Machine.
