Re: Armando Galarraga perfect through 7
Commissioner Selig: "As Jim Joyce said in his postgame comments, there is no dispute that last night's game should have ended differently.
"While the human element has always been an integral part of baseball, it is vital that mistakes on the field be addressed..." "Given last night's call & other recent events, I will examine our umpiring system...use of instant replay & all other related features." "Before I announce any decisions, I will consult with all...parties, including our 2 unions & the Special Committee for On-Field Matters" http://twitter.com/MLB

Re: Armando Galarraga perfect through 7
I can't believe it but I think Selig nailed this one. Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the taste. We'll see what changes result, if any.
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releas...=.jsp&c_id=mlb Because it's simply a press release, I hope the mods don't mind if I post it in its entirety. Quote:

Re: Armando Galarraga perfect through 7
Bud has never been know for his speedy decisions. I don't think we'll see one here. Like, this season.
I think this one will disappear in a cloud of obfuscation and spud-blather and "it is still under review" and "part of a bigger problem". His way of "solving" problems is to string them along endlessly and let them bleed off.

Re: Armando Galarraga perfect through 7
Although I don't see in that statement where Selig said this, the major media outlets are telling me that statement says that Bud will not overturn the original call Joyce made on the field.

Re: Armando Galarraga perfect through 7
I agree. This hot potato will cool off and languish in Bud's drawer full of issues that he's leaving for the next commissioner to handle. Adding instant replay runs too counter to front-burner, TV-driven efforts at speeding up play. Speeding up play makes the game more desirable to broadcasters. Instant replay mostly just complicates the game's relationship with the media.

Re: Armando Galarraga perfect through 7
How big would the asterisk have to be if by some chance, they did eventually decide to change the call?? AFAIK such a move would be unprecedented in the history of the game. The ump blew it. It sucks, and he apologized. But, if you credit the pitcher with a perfect game after the fact, I think you are asking for trouble on the next controversial issue. Hey while they're at it, maybe MLB would go back 25 years and reverse Deckinger's call too?!

Re: Armando Galarraga perfect through 7
Don Denkinger's call in game six of the 1985 World Series is not as "clean" as last night's blown call by Joyce. With Kansas City behind by one run in the ninth inning, Denkinger missed a call at first base, calling Jorge Orta safe. However, Orta was the leadoff hitter. Instead of having one out and nobody on, the Royals had a man on and no outs. Unquestionably the call by Denkinger improved K.C.'s chances of winning the game, but it does not follow that, without question, St. Louis would have won game six but for the call. Plenty of teams have failed to hold a one run lead with one out in the ninth inning. I can't think of any team that failed to hold a lead with three outs in the ninth inning, and that was what the situation should have been last night, but for Joyce's blown call.

Re: Armando Galarraga perfect through 7
I wonder how much money a perfect game can mean to a player? It's a feat that you can make money off of long after you are retired.

Probably not much, maybe he can sit in the lobby of a casino and sign scraps of paper for a couple of weeks but it's hardly a marketable skillset.
