Two more no-schoolers in round 39. Both college-age, though.

Vidal actually is listed as a catcher on Miami-Dade's website, and judging from his .995 fielding percentage with one error, he most likely played catcher all year as well.

Re: The Official Second Day Draft Thread - 2010

Round 39: Jacob May, SS, Lakota West High School. The grandson of ex-Red Lee May.

He's got to be headed to college (edit: he is, Coastal Carolina), but this is the first time I can remember the Reds drafting a guy out of my high school directly. Of course, current Louisville Bat Matt Klinker went there, but the Reds picked him as a college guy out of Furman.

Re: The Official Second Day Draft Thread - 2010

Detroit just took Lloyd McClendon's son Bo out of my daughter's alma mater Valparaiso University. I think they said McClendon is Detroit's hitting coach.

Re: The Official Second Day Draft Thread - 2010

Dodgers drafted a player from Mt St. Joe, RHP Steven Matre. There were a number of Matres from Reading when I was in high school at Moeller.

Ah, so 3B Garrett Nash, who was one of the no-school guys from round 39- had been on a Mormon mission the past two years. Interesting. Went to Arizona.

Re: The Official Second Day Draft Thread - 2010

Somebody needs to turn up the volume on the Pirates feed. They're always really quiet, sort of like their bats.

RHP/SS Nick Sawyer (Hebron HS, Carrollton, TX): Sawyer does everything on the field well, including play both shortstop and the outfield at a very high level and swing the bat with power. He topped at 90 mph on the mound with a hard, sharp curveball and a feel for his pitches. Colleges should be all over him for his two-way ability.
