Lohman lacks the imposing physicality of some shortstops, but his body type will be suited to staying in the middle of the diamond. Lohman has a lot of other tools a lot of other players don’t have. He’s a steady 60 runner from the right side, which gives him above-average pro speed. His other tool is his arm, which is easily one of the best at his position among college players nationally in the 2010 draft. Lohman is smooth and nimble defensively, and his range, while not exceptional, is adequate for the position.

The question he’s going to have to answer as a pro is with the bat. Offensively, he’s a max-effort type of swinger in BP. He will be best served if he keeps the ball on the ground and slaps line drives in the future. Lohman doesn’t have much physical projection left, and though he has a big arm, he would lack the size to profile on the mound. If he can adapt his offensive style to the pro game and show that he can put the ball in play consistently with wood, Lohman will have a chance to find his way as a National League type of No. 2, No. 8 or very good bench player. His arm, glove, speed and aptitude should buy him some time to develop offensively at the pro levels.

Re: The Official Second Day Draft Thread - 2010

I'm fine with safer college picks in the first round but I wish the Reds would take some risks in later rounds. Take some of those raw but very toolsy players with huge upside.

Gauntlett Eldemire is my No. 1 target in the 4th round.

Still holding out for James Paxton.

Absolutely no power in college with a Aluminum bat. Not a position of need in the system. Feels like they drafted Shane Carlson again. Just in the 3rd round this time. This defiantly means Hamilton will start in the AZL and Lohman will be in Billings. Maybe its a signablity pick to keep $ free for Grandal.

Agree.

1 HR this past year and 5 HR total in 3 years of college with an aluminum bat. Wow.

Love the first two picks, but don't like this one.

From what I could gather I see Willy Lohman as a Paul Janish type - slightly better hitter, same strong arm, slightly worse fielder. All in all, a bench type player. Those types are fine, but I think third round is a bit high for him. Good guy to have though as he profiles as a baseball rat type.

Sounds like the reviews Zack Cozart got when drafted. The key is that it seems this guy can stay at SS. If so, Lohman can be a good pick.

Yeah, I don't really understand the Lohman pick. Not this early.

The Reds next pick is #124 right? I'm hoping for Gauntlett Eldemire or James Paxton.

Did you just call him Willy Lohman?

Lohman's K/BB went from 75/33 in first two years to 26/18 this year. OBP .471.
