ESPN's J.P. Riccardi... What do the Reds need to do to stay in it?

This question was just posed to him. He said that the Reds need to make a move for another bat and one player that he thinks would be a good fit is Jose Bautista from Toronto. He said he is having a career year, we can ride him while he's hot and with our surplus of pitching can get him.

What say you all about this deal? He is having a career year and the Reds can insert him into the OF with Bruce and Stubbs/Heisey. Gomes and Nix off the bench.

LOL!! Thanks Dave. I was trying to edit and fix that, but you beat me to it.

Re: ESPN's J.P. Riccardi... What do the Reds need to do to stay in it?

Firstly, that is a very AdamDunn-ish line for Bautista this year. (.237/.361/.543/.903.)
Secondly, having lived through the steroid era I am pretty cynical when players start hitting at a level they never sniffed before in their career. Here are his SLG numbers from the last five seasons. All of which he has had (or will reach) at least 400 PA.

Code:
AGE	PA	SLG
25	469	0.420
26	614	0.414
27	424	0.405
28	404	0.408
29	366	0.543
One of those numbers looks completely out of place to me. His career SLG coming into this season was exactly .400. Is his 2010 legitimate? Maybe. Will he fall back to earth? Probably. I wouldn't take the chance.

And, having said that, he will probably go on a second-half tear. =)

I really don't see Walt making a major deal. I see some minor ones picking up maybe a bench/role player who plays the infield and maybe a bullpen arm, but nothing huge like the rolen deal of last year.

Bautista is due for a horrible 2nd half. Pass.

couldn't you say the same for Rolen and Orlando and Gomes?

Re: ESPN's J.P. Riccardi... What do the Reds need to do to stay in it?

We have a whole team full of guys hitting above their career numbers. We don't need another one. They're all due to regress to the mean at some point, let's just hope some of them don't.

Not to mention, hitting .237? I thought we re-did our team to get rid of guys like that.

Rolen and Gomes at least have a track record of success. And I don't know where you've been, but Orlando has already started to regress. He keeps up his pace, he'll be flat on the Mendoza line in no time. Bautista has played out of his mind this half -- no way he keeps it up in the 2nd half.

Then the 3-day rest should do him good. I doubt if he finishes the year over .650 OPS. If you look at his game-by-game stats, after the third game of the year he has never topped the .700 OPS mark. I think he is a mid-30s shortstop that is showing his age. I hope he proves me wrong. One thing I do know is that Dusty will keep running him out there come hell or high water.
