sad end to a very good career as a manager. to end with the Cubs? ugh. it's like eating out of a dumpster.

he never should have left the Reds. so ridiculous. there's no reason he couldn't have managed 20+ years here.

Re: Piniella to retire after 2010 season
It's about time. Lou was once again getting the same look about him that he got in his last years with Tampa Bay - scraggly beard, far out look, look of hopelessness.
I see only one chance for the Cubs to get the team back on top: Hire Frank Chance. He has been the only in the history of the club able to figure out how to get the Cubs the trophy. Ever. (ties don't count, 1885). |

The lesson here: being a Cub makes you want to quit baseball entirely.

Tony Perez? Or were you referring to Davey Johnson?

True, that's why I was confused.

Re: Piniella to retire after 2010 season
Lou Pinella has had a long and successful career. He should be proud.
I do agree with WOY though about Johnson being a better Manager. |

Re: Piniella to retire after 2010 season
I saw this coming. Seems like the game has passed him by a bit. Thanks for being perfect for 1990 when I first discovered baseball, Lou

Re: Piniella to retire after 2010 season
Can't remember much about when Lou was The Reds skipper but I'll always hold a fond place for him in my baseball heart simply because he was once a great Reds skipper.
I'm really sad he chose to go out as a Cub. Not only do I hate the Cubs with a passion reserved for only the most loathsome of the loathsome, they're just an all around terrible franchise with terrible fans. I really wish he had chosen somewhere better. Somewhere not in the NL Central. Either way, I wish him the best in his retirement. And ya never know, we may see him back some day. Jim Leyland came back, after all. |

Re: Piniella to retire after 2010 season
The little I have watched the Cubs in the last year,Lou just didn't seem to have that fire he once had. So this didn't surprise me at all. He is 66 and I'm sure he's tired of all the headaches you have to face day in and day out being a MLB manager. He will always be remembered well in Cincy and best of luck to him in the future.
