The Assassin has died

The man they called ‘The Assassin’ has died.

Multiple media reports indicate that Jack Tatum, the fierce hitting safety for the Oakland Raiders and before that Ohio State University, had died today of a heart attack. Tatum was 61.
Great hitter, sympathies to his family

Re: The Assassin has died

Sad news for the buckeye community.

I saw him on the side lines either last year or the year before and he looked like a homeless man. I wondered if all those hard hits had left an impact.

Ever notice that football players don't tend to live long lives?

Don't think this stemmed from his football career. He was diabetic and had arterial issues that cost him his leg.

Re: The Assassin has died

Physically Jack Tatum was a mess. The diabetes absolutely destroyed him. I saw him a couple of years ago, outside the Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe, and he looked very sickly. He had a leg amputated, and I believe he was missing all the toes on the remaining foot.

While I don't know how, I wouldn't be surprised if his football career contributed to his long-term health however indirectly. Makes players that retire early, like Barry Sanders, look smart in my eyes.
