That was a bizarre play. What exactly happened? Why didn't Gomes keep running to second?

Bruce hit a screamer at the 1st basemen and he caught it and dropped it and kicked it around...

Think it was one of those, hits and you break and go "Oh Crap!" and break back to the base and he dropped it...
