Gibson's Top 50 Guitar Solos of All Time

It's a pretty good list.

http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyl...tar-Solos-924/

1. “Stairway to Heaven,” Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page)
2. “Eruption,” Van Halen (Eddie Van Halen)
3. “All Along the Watchtower,” The Jimi Hendrix Experience

I see that music from before I was born is well represented...

I can't listen to Guns n Roses very much, but I've gotta say that their two entries, Sweet Child and November Rain, are my favorites on the list.

No BB King? Robert Johnson? Django Reinhardt?

Okay, not rock and roll. Fair enough.

But no Robbie Robertson? He might be the best rock guitarist of all time.

Vai and Satriani also could rightfully complain.

How many groups actually have talent any more? Most of them dont even play their own music.

There are a ton of talented bands still out there. Regardless, guitar solo's are a bit anachronistic so it stands to reason that a list of "the greatest" is going to feature music older music.

Personally, I think the list needs a little J Mascis

YouTube - Raisans - Dinosaur Jr.

There are more than enough good bands today, I'd add The Hold Steady to any guitar solo list myself.

More of a travesty than that, no Megadeth mentioned at all!

4. “Hotel California,” Eagles (Don Felder, Joe Walsh)
6. “Free Bird,” Lynyrd Skynyrd (Gary Rossington, Allen Collins)
7. “Layla,” Derek and the Dominos (Eric Clapton, Duane Allman)
25. “Sweet Jane” (live), Lou Reed (Steve Hunter, Dick Wagner)
38. “Blue Sky,” Allman Brothers Band (Duane Allman, Dickey Betts)
42. “The End,” The Beatles (Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon)
So, how are these solos if others are playing? Shouldn't they be duets or, in the case of "The End" a trio?

Too many on the list are "look at me" solos that detract from the song instead of enhancing it. And yes, Eddie, I'm looking at you. We all know how good you are, now get back to the song, please?

Re: Gibson's Top 50 Guitar Solos of All Time

I'll echo what others have said here, its a slanted list for certain. There are too many missing. That said though, I think I really like 75% of the ones listed. Yeah Eruption is just Eddie showing off and yeah Steve Vai or Joe Satriani are better players from a technical standpoint, but I think this list shows mostly solos that are 'feel' type performances more than technical displays of power and ability.

When I was a kid songs like 'Watchtower', 'One', 'Heartbreaker', 'Time' and a dozen others on that list just made me want to pick up a guitar and become as cool as those guys were.
