This Date In Reds History (10/7/10): Past Lineups--1940 World Series & 1975 NLCS
70 years ago (1940), a 4-0 win in Game 6 of the World Series at Crosley Field vs. the Tigers.
Detroit Dick Bartell ss Barney McCosky cf Charlie Gehringer 2b Hank Greenberg lf Rudy York 1b Bruce Campbell rf Pinky Higgins 3b Birdie Tebbetts c Schoolboy Rowe p Cincinnati Billy Werber 3b Mike McCormick cf Ival Goodman rf Frank McCormick 1b Jimmy Ripple lf Jimmie Wilson c Eddie Joost 2b Billy Myers ss Bucky Walters p WP: Bucky Walters (2-0) LP: Schoolboy Rowe (0-2) HR: CIN - Bucky Walters (1). Bucky Walters pitched a five-hit shutout to get the win for the Reds, and even the best-of-seven Series at 3-3. Walters, a converted third baseman, also helped his cause with a home run in the eighth inning off Tigers reliever (and future Reds manager) Fred Hutchinson. It was Hutch's only career World Series appearance.

Re: This Date In Reds History (10/7/10): Past Lineups--1940 World Series & 1975 NLCS
35 years ago (1975), a 5-3 10-inning win in Game 3 of the NLCS at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.
Cincinnati Pete Rose 3b Joe Morgan 2b Johnny Bench c Tony Perez 1b George Foster lf Dave Concepcion ss Ken Griffey rf Cesar Geronimo cf Gary Nolan p Pittsburgh Rennie Stennett 2b Richie Hebner 3b Al Oliver cf Willie Stargell 1b Dave Parker rf Richie Zisk lf Manny Sanguillen c Frank Taveras ss John Candelaria p WP: Rawly Eastwick (1-0) LP: Ramon G. Hernandez (0-1) Sv: Pedro Borbon (1) HR: CIN - Dave Concepcion (1), Pete Rose (1). PIT - Al Oliver (1). Ed Armbrister's sacrifice fly and Joe Morgan's RBI double gave the Reds a 5-3 lead in the tenth inning, and Pedro Borbon pitched a perfect inning to nail down the save and lead the Reds to a 3-0 sweep in the best-of-five series. The Reds would advance to the World Series to face the AL Champion Red Sox, who swept the Athletics 3-0 in the ALCS, with Game 1 to be played in Boston on October 11.
