"If Payrolls Decided Baseball Games" and other oddities

http://www.flipflopflyin.com/flipflo...lsdecided.html

Kind of an interesting website, with some fun and interesting graphics related to the game. Hope you all find this interesting!

Fun but misguided in the structure.

Saying the Cubs should have gone 162-0...that just discredits the results. Maybe have it done using probability vis a vis payroll ratio between the 2 teams.

According to this a 161-1 Cubs team underperformed.

I don't think the author is trying to draw any conclusions at all; from what I see the blog is a simple collection of baseball oddities (like his overlap of the three current Yankees logos, or his bobblehead giveaway chart).

Kind of fun to look at but not useful for anything further.

It's not trying to be be a "real" estimator how teams should perform based on a known correlation between wins and $$.

It's just a fun way to think about payroll. In fact, it makes the point pretty clearly that while payoll helps, it's hardly fate.

That's what everybody says right now, but when the Yankees sign Cliff Lee this offseason, everybody will start screaming at how unfair it is for small market teams.

I already scream it. Stupidity of GMs/managers, injuries and some luck factor in as well, but the playing field is NOT AT ALL LEVEL in the game. Of course I state the obvious. It will be argued (as it always is), but there are still folks who think the earth is flat or a spaceship is coming to take them off this earth.
