Pat Gillick elected to HOF, Concepcion misses

Gillick is the lone electee just announced by the veteran's committee. 12 of 16 votes were needed, he got 13. Marvin Miller just missed with 11, Concepcion was next with 8. No one else came close. I thought Steinbrenner would've had a good shot, apparently not. Here's the full story:

Was this Davey's last chance? Or can he be considered again?

when they were introducing the committee...Bench, Perez, Robinson, Ozzie....I thought for sure Davey was gonna make it. Johnny needs to work on his lobbying skills

So, Ozzie Smith is a first ballot Hall of Famer and yet Concepcion can't get in despite them being very similar players? It doesn't make any sense.

From John Fay:

Tony Perez, who is on the Veterans Committee, likes Concepcion's chances going forward. "He'll get in. His first year, he hot 50 percent."

For the last decade or so the Veterans Committee has generally refused to induct any player while opening the doors of Copperstown wide to a variety of executives and managers. After inducting Bill Mazeroski in 2001 the only other MLB player selected by the Veterans Committee was Joe Gordon in 2008.
Meanwhile the Veterans Committee selected Barney Dreyfuss (owner of the Pirates in the early decades of the 20th Century), former Commissioner Bowie Kuhn explode: , Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley, and former managers Billy Southworth and Dick Williams in 2008, followed in 2010 by former umpire Doug Harvey and former manager Whitey Herzog.

I would be thrilled to see Davey enshrined in the HOF but it disturbs me that it is taking his buddies ( Bench, Perez, Robinson) to get in. I would feel the same if Tommy John was on the verge of getting in and the deciding voters were his his former teammates/buddies Reggie Jackson, Rich Gossage and Don Sutton.

I will do cartwheels if Davey gets in but I just wish it was a more legit process.

Sounds like there are some strong personalities on the committee who either have very high standards for their peers or an inability to set aside their dislike for former opponents.

Davey didn't do backflips and have a cool name.

After reading his reaction, I hope he never gets in:

Quote:
"A long time ago, it became apparent that the Hall sought to bury me long before my time, as a metaphor for burying the union and eradicating its real influence. Its failure is exemplified by the fact that I and the union of players have received far more support, publicity and appreciation from countless fans, former players, writers, scholars, experts in labor management relations, than if the Hall had not embarked on its futile and fraudulent attempt to rewrite history. It is an amusing anomaly that the Hall of Fame has made me famous by keeping me out."

The writers and most posters at baseball ref site...basically use WAR like the Holy Grail...so therefore, davey should never touch the Hall as Smith is clearly better, and so is The Scooter and The Rabbit.

Marvin Miller will go down as one of the most influential executives in MLB history. It really doesn't matter if we love him or hate him, he should be remembered in Cooperstown.
