Re: Reds to unveil statue of Johnny Bench on Sept. 17th

There are statues of Pete, Tony, Senior and the whole 'Great 8' in the Hall of Fame.

Would still be nice to see the whole place surrounded by Reds greats, including Pete. He's an embarrassment more to himself than Cincinnati.

I found this kinda interesting, Baseballs Best Statues, by Ballpark.

The Reds Statues are ranked third, behind Pittsburgh and Detroit.

I can remember Bench singing "Cats in the Cradle" on the Bobby Goldsboro Show a long time ago. He was a decent singer,IIRC, but I was a little kid then too who's hero was Johnny Bench.

I remember seeing him sing on several different shows. I seem to remember him being on Hee-Haw; am I remembering that right? He was my main man too, CR. I didn't care if he could sing or not, but he did do a decent job which isn't fair. I couldn't catch, hit, throw or SING...lol

Also a proud Indian Hill Alum I believe.

Yes he was on Hee Haw. The RFD channel shows reruns of Hee Haw on Sunday nights and they showed the one with Bench a month or so ago. He didn't sing, just gave out a couple of one liners in typical Hee Haw fashion.

Bench was a real national celebrity back in the early 70's. He toured with Bob Hope on his USO shows and, IIRC, went to Viet Nam with Hope. I'm sure he was on quite a few other shows making guest appearances.

Click "Self" under "Filmography"

Looks like he had a role in a yet to be released Easy Rider sequel.

He didn't do a Love Boat though.
