Braun signs another LTC with Brewers

tack another 5 years and $105 million onto his current deal
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/R...details-042111

Quote:
The Brewers, making a major investment in their future, signed left fielder Ryan Braun to a five-year, $105 million contract extension Thursday.
The deal, which covers the years 2016-2020 and a mutual option for an additional year, will follow Braun's current eight-year, $45 million contract, which expires in '15.

"We're prepared to move on without Prince Fielder by moving Ryan Braun to first base at some point in the future."

The deal includes a no-trade clause. The mutual option is 20 million with a 4 million buyout.

Quality ballplayer, but that's an enormous amount of time to be on the hook for a dude you controlled until 2015 anyway.

Not a fan of the deal.

If Braun is worth this, what is Votto worth?

More than the Reds can pay, that's for sure.

Even if it's $20-25MM per year, it's not 'for sure'. I can think of multiple scenarios that are feasible and could make Votto affordable for the Reds.

Affordable? Or affordable-without-handcuffing? Not being argumentative, but it's a fine line for a small-mid market team, IMO.

I still think the Howard contract will set the standard for the Votto and Pujols contract.

Presuming the budget isn't expanded, extending Votto--barring new acquisitions--would handcuff the Reds in terms of losing a Volquez or Cueto as a worst-case scenario. The Reds' financial constraints are greatly exaggerated.

I like Ryan Braun but this is ridiculous.
