I'm looking for a job, and wondering if any fellow Redszoners can help me out. I am a recent high school graduate, who will be attending the University of Cincinnati next year, studying political science. I have only had two Summer jobs in my lifetime, so prior work experience is limited. I have applied at all of the retail stores I can think of, including Sears, Kmart, Meijer, and Walmart.

I am specifically looking for something near the Milford/Eastgate area. If anybody knows of any openings, or even would be willing to give me an interview, please respond on this thread of PM me.

I can't speak for the Cincinnati area, but I would give Kroger a look if you are considering retail. They hire pretty regularly, especially during the summertime as people are on vacation. You will have to pay union dues unless Ohio is right to work though, so that is the only negative.

I don't know if this is out of your way or not, but they are supposed to be converting the Biggs in Batavia into a Jungle Jims. I know one of the KMarts in Northern KY where I have family was closing last month when I was there, so you might want to keep that in mind.

Definitely list summer job references though, unless you left on bad terms. Anything that can help you get your foot in the door is a bonus.

Its not in the Milford/Eastgate area, but Home City Ice is a really good summer/college job. You would be driving a truck (no CDL required, just a realitively clean driving record) and delivering ice. They hire mostly college students. Its some pretty physical work, and it is a commission job, though the pay is pretty good. You might check that out. I loved it there. It was nice being out on your own, making money for doing your job well. I don't know if you can apply online, but you can go to the plant in Wilder, KY to apply. I applied, interviewed, and had my physical/drug test in the same day and was working/training the next.

You are young, instead of working retail I'd consider something a little more interesting. Summer camp/King's Island/something else seasonal. I worked summers at a Salvation Army summer camp in Columbus, there's one near Cincinnati called Swoneky.

Possibly not for you, I know some people prefer more mundane employment, but just throwing it out there. There are a lot of things you can only do from 18-22-ish, I'd at least consider them.

Well one thing I'm looking for is a possibility to work after the Summer is over. I need to maintain a solid amount of part-time hours during school to keep out of student debt. I have an interview tomorrow, and hopefully that is something they mention.

I previously had applied for an asset protection position. The manager was reluctant to hire someone my age because they thought I was looking for just a Summer job. (Though I made my intentions clear) I just wish managers would get over the age on the application, and focus more on the person who has been in college for three years during high school, while taking honors classes, being a member of a historical society, while still being an outgoing teenager. I am very grown up for my age, and it's amazing how easily that gets looked over.

Well its not your fault, its the fault of countless teenagers/college students that look good on paper, but don't work out for a "regular" position due to the transiant state most college kids are in. Companies have to invest a good amount of time/money into training a worker (I don' know what the job entails) so its understandable if they're hesitant to hire an employee they're not positive will still want that job 3-6 months down the line.

At any rate, if your thinking about jobs once school starts back up, if you're failry responsible you should be able to land a gig at Kroger, Sears, Walmart, etc.. pretty much any day of the week. Most of those places go thru workers on a regular basis. I thought Jungle Jim's was opening up in the old Bigs at East gate, not Batavia? Not that those two areas are all that far apart, but it could make a difference. They're obviously going to be hiring a significant work force once they're up and running.

I know some peoople that worked for Home City ice as well in college, and they all enjoyed it. They worked hard, had to be up early to deliver the ice, but had most of their afternoons/evenings free and made pretty good money as long as they were willing to work hard. If you're applying for a retail job in the fall, having a job like that on your resume shows that you're willing to work hard, show up on time and you're responsible. Half of retail, at least entry level retail is just showing up and being presentable.

If you're looking to make a few extra bucks, you might be able to make a few more bucks in the fall finding a job waiting tables and living off of tips. Find a restaurant that has a pretty steady and busy weekend/night crowd and talk with the manager about a job. Even if you have a summer job, let them know that you're looking for a regular job in the fall once that summer job is open, but are willing to spend a few weeks prior going thru training so you can hit the ground running in the fall.

It is, but I've seen applications where it asks for birthdate. You can generally do the math to find out how old somebody is.

I still think you should give Home City Ice a try if you want a job that isn't just an ordinary job. They are very good at working with college student's schedules and welcome them to work year round. I worked on the weekends while in school, but they will also work you during the week if you are available. I had multiple oppurtunities to work out of town as well during the summer. I spent a week in Louisville working out of a plant there. Hotel was paid for by the company. I really can not tell you how great of a job it was for me. I had my third interview at Sears today, and finally got the job! The man interviewing me said that I am the youngest person he has ever hired for a sales position. I'm not sure how well I will do on a commission-based income, though I know that I am willing to work hard for my money. Sales experience is something that seemingly every company looks for, and adding that to my job experiences can serve to be more valuable than the money I make.

Thank all of you very much for the input. I'm sure that I will do well in this job, or atleast be afforded the oppertunity to transfer within the company. If not, I'm still young.

Congratulations. You're absolutely right that sales experience is very useful for pretty much every job going forward.

You're not the only one looking in that area, brother. I've applied to 15 places and have hardly gotten an interview. I'm giving up and hoping a temp agency can set me up with something light industrial.

Though no help to you now, those of you looking for work, I would keep the new casino opening next year in mind. It can be a lucrative career and an excellent job for going to school. The jobs you want are the tokes or tip jobs. Dealers, bartenders, waitresses, or even slot attendents are the best starting jobs in the casino.
