Reds have pick #27 in 2011 MLB draft
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today...0/2610756.html
According to Baseball America the Reds have pick #27. This will be the latest the Reds have picked in many years. What players do you think the Reds will consider drafting? |

Re: Reds have pick #27 in 2011MLB draft
Tough to even imagine who will be available at #27. I would love for us to go after a corner outfielder with power or a starting pitcher. Have to best available, but those are the two positions that I would love to grab at first round.

I'd like at least two true corner OF prospects in the first 10-12 rounds. I'd also like a solid third base prospect with the glove to stick and projectable power.

Here are picks 26-30, going back to 2003. What this tells me is that we should not be expecting the pick to be an automatic success.
2010 Kyle Parker Jessie Biddle Zach Lee Cam Bedrosian Chevez Clarke 2009 Eric Arnett Nick Franklin Remond Fuentes Slade Heathcott Brett Jackson 2008 Dan Schlereth Carlos Gutierrez Gerrit Cole (did not sign) Lonnie Chisenhall Casey Kelly 2007 James Simmons Rick Porcello Ben Revere Wendell Fairley Andrew Brackman 2006 Bryan Morris Jason Place Daniel Bard Kyle McCullough Adam Ottavino 2005 Craig Hansen Joey Devine Colby Rasmus Jacob Marceaux Tyler Greene 2004 Richie Robnett Tyler Tankersley Blake DeWitt Matt Campbell Eric Hurley 2003 Brian Snyder Eric Duncan Daric Barton Carlos Quentin Mitch Maier

Re: Reds have pick #27 in 2011MLB draft
So basically, the most we can expect is an average position player, a starting pitcher who fell due to signability concerns, or a solid reliever. Obviously, our hopes will be much higher, but that's not a very impressive list at all.

Rick Porcello
Daniel Bard Colby Rasmus Blake DeWitt Carlos Quentin Let's face it, most draft picks don't make it, even first rounders. If we get someone who touches the ML success of the guys above, we'll all be quite happy! |

Sleepin' on Daric Barton, I tells ya. And there are some other good prospects in that mix who haven't reached the show yet...

Of course it will be BPA. Ideally, I'd like that to be a pitcher or a corner OF with a big bat. Probably a college kid.

I dunno...I have to agree that, even though this is a list of LATE first rounders, there's not a lot of impact there. But we'll see....lot of time for a few of those guys.

Seems like late in the 1st would be a good opportunity to nab a high-end talent who has signability concerns and wants a big bonus.

Or, sign a FA LF and give up the first round pick next year.

Don't forget that this is also an abnormally deep draft... The talent will be there, it's up to the Reds to identify it.

Didn't we get the legendary John Oliver around that slot a few years ago?

Re: Reds have pick #27 in 2011MLB draft
This is simple. You're always hearing about these guys that were drafted in later rounds who make it big (Pujols was picked in the 13th rd). Just figure out who that 13th rounder is gonna be this year and take him in the first. How hard was that?
