Re: This Date In Reds History (7/9/11): Past Lineups
65 years ago (1946), the American League defeated the National League, 12-0, in the All-Star Game at Fenway Park in Boston.
National League Red Schoendienst (STL) 2b Stan Musial (STL) lf Johnny Hopp (BOS) cf Dixie Walker (BRO) rf Whitey Kurowski (STL) 3b Johnny Mize (NY) 1b Walker Cooper (NY) c Marty Marion (STL) ss Claude Passeau (CHI) p American League Dom DiMaggio (BOS) cf Johnny Pesky (BOS) ss Ted Williams (BOS) lf Charlie Keller (NY) rf Bobby Doerr (BOS) 2b Mickey Vernon (WAS) 1b Ken Keltner (CLE) 3b Frankie Hayes (CLE) c Bob Feller (CLE) p WP: Bob Feller (CLE) LP: Claude Passeau (CHI) Sv: Jack Kramer (STL) HR: AL - Charlie Keller (NY), Ted Williams 2 (BOS). Indians starter Bob Feller, Hal Newhouser of the Tigers, and Jack Kramer of the Browns combined on a three-hit shutout with 10 K's for the AL. The only hits for the NL were a one-out infield single by Cardinals CF Johhny Hopp in the first inning, a one-out infield single by Giants C Walker Cooper in the second, and a two-out pinch-hit single by Cubs OF Peanuts Lowrey in the sixth. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Red Sox LF Ted Williams hit his second homer of the game, the famous shot into the bullpen off Pirates RHP Rip Sewell's "Eephus pitch". The NL and AL each used 21 players, with all sixteen clubs represented. Two Reds played in the game. Rookie RHP Ewell Blackwell was the third pitcher for the NL, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing two runs on three hits, with 1 K and 1 BB. Blackwell was the only pitcher of the four used by the NL (the others were Passeau, Dodgers RHP Kirby Higbe, and Sewell) who did not give up a home run. C Ray Lamanno was 0-for-1, grounding out as a pinch-hitter for Blackwell. The managers for the game were Charlie Grimm of the Cubs for the NL, and Steve O'Neill of the Tigers for the AL.

50 years ago (1961), a 14-3 win at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Cincinnati Eddie Kasko ss Don Blasingame 2b Vada Pinson cf Frank Robinson rf Gordy Coleman 1b Gus Bell lf Gene Freese 3b Johnny Edwards c Joey Jay p Los Angeles Maury Wills ss Junior Gilliam 3b Ron Fairly rf Wally Moon lf Tommy Davis cf Norm Larker 1b Johnny Roseboro c Charlie Neal 2b Roger Craig p WP: Joey Jay (12-4) LP: Roger Craig (3-5) HR: CIN - Frank Robinson 2 (23), Gene Freese (18). LA - Charlie Neal (7), Johnny Roseboro (14). Joey Jay pitched a complete-game five-hitter with 5 K's to get the win for the Reds. In the top of the sixth inning, Dodgers RHP Don Drysdale was ejected by home plate umpire Dusty Boggess for hitting Frank Robinson with a pitch after knocking him down twice earlier in the at-bat. I guess Boggess decided that if it took Drysdale three tries to hit Robbie, then he needed to hit the showers.
