The Dodgers scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eleventh inning on a catcher's interference call against Johnny Bench with the bases loaded. Manny Mota was the runner at 3rd, and he attempted to steal home. Bench stepped in front of the plate and tagged him for what appeared to be the third out, but Willie Crawford swung to protect Mota and made contact with Bench. Catcher's interference was the call, and Crawford took his base. Since the bases were loaded, Mota crossed the plate with the winning run.

Re: This Date In Reds History (8/1/11): Past Lineups
Quote:
Another strange thing happened in a game in LA during the 1971 season. During a game a bag of dirt mysteriously fell from the sky and landed on the infield. Near Woody Woodward,IIRC. No one every received an explanation for this as to where it came from or what was going on. I can still remember to this day the Reds announcers,Al Michaels, Joe Nuxhall and manager Sparky Anderson talking in amazement about this the following day. Does anyone else remember reading or hearing about this?
