2012 Payroll "likely" to increase

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/2...news|text|Reds

Quote:
The Reds’ payroll for this season was $80.8 million, up from $76.1 million the year before. A similar bump would put the Reds in the $85 million range.

Does that mean the Reds will venture in the free agent market in a big way?

“Probably not,” Jocketty said.

Trades will be the order of the day in my opinion. The reality of baseball economics says the Reds can't grab high price free agents and could in fact harm themselves long term by doing so.

Yep, a blockbuster trade is what I'm hoping for this offseason. Course, that could mean acquiring a relatively high-priced player, so it's a good thing to know the payroll is going to increase next year. Attendance was good this season since the Reds were coming off a playoff season, so the financial situation should be pretty solid. I don't expect a big bump in payroll, but if the right deal is there, I could see Jocketty talking Castellini into approaching $90 mil.

I thought Fay was rather cavalier when he included the Reds picking up Cordero's option. I know that his its own thread, but I think it's doubtful they just exercise the $12M option. If Cordero's back, it's going to be on something where he's taking an affordable amount to finish his career here, the only thing the Reds have going in such negotiations if an extension if being discussed.

Agreed. The problem is affordable doesn't mean there isn't opportunity cost. Willy T was 2 years $6.5 Million, Affordable no doubt, but was money not available to be used on something that could actually help the team. Votto at $25 Million is affordable. Edgar Renteria at $2.1 Million is not affordable IMO.

Anything much over $2 Million per year and for more than 2 years is not affordable in Cordero's case and even then it should only be spent if other needs are filled and there is some money left-over.
