Re: Carlos Quentin Headed To The Padres

Quote:
The Padres have acquired Carlos Quentin from the White Sox for Simon Castro and Pedro Hernandez, the teams announced. It's the second time Padres GM Josh Byrnes and White Sox GM Kenny Williams have gotten together for a trade involving Quentin; Byrnes was the Diamondbacks GM when the outfielder was*traded from Arizona to the ChiSox in 2007.*

Neither Castro nor Hernandez ranked among the Padres' top ten prospects according to Baseball America, though Castro was their number three prospect just last year.

At first glance it looks like the Padres are getting Quentin at a bargain price.

The Reds don't even have questionable young pitching in AAA to make a deal like this. All the more reason to add a 6th starter.

Re: Carlos Quentin Headed To The Padres

Nuts! I thought he would look nice in the middle of our lineup.

Re: Carlos Quentin Headed To The Padres

I'm not familiar enough with the Padre lineup...would the acquisition of Quentin mean that somebody like Denorfia could be had at a reasonable price?

Re: Carlos Quentin Headed To The Padres

Quentin had one nice year awhile ago. Since then, the best thing you can say about him is that he's a little better than Gomes. Very average player with a big contract.

Quentin has had OPS numbers better than .800 in 4 of 6 seasons and hits against both RHP and LHP.

He's way better than Gomes, but if the Reds could get some one to hit against RH, I'd be fine with bringing Gomes back to platoon with him.

That would be Heisey. He hits right handers better than lefties.

My hope is that Heisey platoons with Stubbs. Need somebody else for LF.

I'll bet Quentin really loves getting to play his contract year in PETCO.

I think he's from SD. Maybe he'll extend for a discount.

If he's from SD, I wonder if Kenny did him a favor dealing him there. Either way, I agree with you. Quentin would have done a great job plugging our hole in left field. On to the next names on the list...

He's a terrible fielder, not Gomes bad, but bad. Heisey plus nearly any warm body can OPS .775+ and provide decent defense, which would be almost exactly as productive as Quentin and cost around $6M less.
