Chone Figgins on the trade block

Chone Figgins' last two years have been nothing short of atrocious, but the Mariners are now willing to eat several million dollars of his salary to try to move him. His numbers are disgusting to look at and he's 33 years old, but he can play third base and left field, and could thus fill in at a couple positions where the Reds need help. He's also been quite valuable in the past, and I'm reminded of another Mariners third baseman-- Adrian Beltre-- who was dreadful with the Ms but turned things around once he got out of Seattle.

So, if the Mariners pay the vast majority of his salary, would Figgins be worth looking at for the Reds? Or has his recent performance just been too bad to give up anything for him?

The question is whether you think he would be an upgrade. If he can be half the player he was in 2009, he'd definitely be better than, say, an ailing Rolen at 3B, but the question is whether there's any chance he can bounce back to that level of performance.

Pass. Even if he stunk on ice, Dusty the Vet-Lover, would play him. We want to try to minimize the damage Dusty can do to this team.

No way IMHO. He's not an upgrade over Rolen(even at last year's unhealthy level), not an upgrade over Cairo, Francisco or Frazier either. Thats all from the standpoint of using him at 3b. His only asset whatsoever at this point of his career might be his speed. A fast guy that can't get on base... Reds fans are already griping about Stubbs for hitting .250, Figgins is 60 points south of that. He stinks, no thanks.

We've already got new guys (Francisco, Frazier) that have been playing much better than Figgins. What's the benefit in giving value up for a downgrade?

Agreed. He can stay on the trading block.

Sounds like the kind of bargain the Reds usually wind up with. No thanks.

They reds already have a utility guy, his name is Todd Frazier he is much younger and cheaper, i would consider it though if you could use it as a bad contract swap and they take Bronson's

Re: Chone Figgins on the trade block

How about Michael Pineda, Brandon League, Chone Figgins and cash for Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal and Homer Bailey?

The Reds get three current or former All Stars (including the youngest player of the bunch) for two promising but unproven prospects and a fallen former top prospect who awaits a salary hike in this first arbitration season.

Pretty much. Francisco and Cairo spend a lot of time at those positions as well, and even Alonso is capable of playing 3B, and even now we still have Rolen as the starter. We don't need a new guy to play there unless he's an above average starter.
