Trade Target: Mat Latos

http://mlbbuzz.yardbarker.com/blog/m...?new_post=true

Rosenthal suggests that the Padres would consider it. The Reds need a TOR arm. They do not have the money for one. They do have a lot of prospects.

The Padres are not likely going to be competitive. By the time they are, Latos would be getting expensive. So.....

What would you offer?

(Yes, I realize they just traded for Huston Street, likely signifying that they aren't in rebuilding mode. Buy hey, things are slow. A guy can dream, can't he?)

I'd do that. Doubt the Pads would trade him now though, especially after acquiring Street. Although there have been rumblings about his quirkiness getting on teammates' nerves.

Nope. Wood is still young and could be more the 2010 Wood than the 2011 Wood -- as a result, not a heckuva lot worse than Latos. The difference between Latos and Wood should cost less than Alonso + Sappelt.

Too many questions still about Latos -- his head being one of them.

Re: Trade Target: Mat Latos

Alonso, Stubbs, Ondrusek, Neftali Soto for Latos and Street.

Alonso is blocked at 1B and is not a true LFer.
Stubbs K's too much for me and we have Heisey who I favor anyway, and Sappelt.
Ondrusek is cheaper than Street.
Soto has played mostly 1B lately, and will be blocked by Votto, but is farther along than our other minor leaguers, and is a top prospect.

Latos anchors our rotation.
Street anchors our bullpen.

Too much to give and I'm not interested in Street and his $8MM salary.

According to Cot's, it's $7.5M and it's only through 2012.

And Alonso makes $1M next season. So it's more like $6.5M after the player swap.

According to Cot's, Latos isn't arb eligible until 2016.

Re: Trade Target: Mat Latos

Soto and Hamilton to me should be the ONLY untouchable prospects including Mesoraco.

I'm a big Latos fan, but I'm guessing the Padres will "ask too much."

So you are cool with the idea of starting Hanigan 120 games a year next year behind the dish and picking up a backup catcher to give him a breather?

I don't necessarily hate the idea. That being said, I think Mesoraco is more untouchable in my mind than Soto or Hamilton.

In my world, no one is untouchable. If you are getting more value than you are giving, do the deal. I want that talent to be ready in 2012 & 2013 so we still have the MVP and we can win in this window.

Padres have their own Stubbs in Cameron Maybin. Between Jesus Guzman and Anthony Rizzo, I'm not sure Alonso would interest them.

I'm thinking something like Wood, Heisey and Grandal.

Re: Trade Target: Mat Latos

Not to divert Rick's thread, but Wood is an interesting question mark.

Is he the next Cliff Lee, or the next Jack Armstrong (1/2 year of rookie dominance followed by Bleh)? Or something in between. I would gladly trade Wood for more of a sure thing, even if it ended up biting us down the road. What does everyone else think?

Would love to get Latos.

Wood makes sense as a trade chip for the Padres. He is a fly ball pitcher, not a good fit for GABP. He is a great fit for the Padres.
