Birthdays: 1/1

Reds:

Bob Owchinko (57) -Former Padre first-round pick was a Red in 1984.

Lynn Jones (59) -Reds draft pick who was lost to the Tigers in the Rule 5 draft. Had an eight-year career as an outfield reserve; his brother Darrell had a brief trial with the Yankees. Not known if he had another brother Darrell.

Others:

Fernando Tatis (37) -On April 23, 1999, he hit two grand slams in one inning, the only player to do so. Later was out of baseball for two years; made a comeback supposedly to raise money to build a church in San Pedro de Macoris.

Lamarr Hoyt (57) -The 1983 AL Cy Young winner, his career was derailed by some pretty serious drug problems. Now clean and sober, he works in the White Sox organization.

Hank Greenberg -First man to slug 25 homers in each league in a season. Still holds the AL record for RBIs in a season by a right-handed hitter (183).

Tim Keefe -Star pitcher from back in the days when pitcher threw from 50 feet. Won ML games in 47 different ball parks, which as far as anyone can tell is a record.

Re: Birthdays: 1/1

Adding Earl Torgeson - A first-baseman from '47 thru '61 but best-remembered as a Boston Brave or Phillie. A fierce competitor, he was noted for his frequent on-field clashes. He wore glasses and, after getting them broken in the first skirmish of his career, he always remembered to carefully remove them before any future run-ins. He was one of the players involved in the Phillies/Dodgers/Braves/Reds deal that saw Cincy give up Joe Adcock and receive Rocky Bridges. Ouch!
